Henry has a heart of gold, he was born into a family of servants in 18th century China and raised in the noble home of the powerful family that they worked for. He grew up with the children who were considered royalty, and because of this, he adopted the posh, clipped British accent that the heirs and heiresses had picked up from their well to do tutors and instructors. He was considered exceptionally bright, especially for the son of a domestic servant and a fisherman, despite his poor lineage he managed to meet and fall in love with a beautiful princess from another province. He had nothing to offer to her, no noble heritage or bountiful riches, but to prove his worth, he enlisted to fight in the Taiping Rebellion, he returned home from the war a decorated soldier that had fought fair and ferociously in each battle he had entered.
With a reputation as both a skilled fighter and a compassionate, merciful soldier who greatly preferred to spare lives instead of end them when he could afford to, Henry was able to earn the approval of the king and queen for their daughter’s heart, they were eventually married, and it wasn’t long before they were starting a family together.
She was nearly six months along with a set of twins the day that it happened. Henry was building a wooden crib by hand when his young wife informed him that she was stepping out into the woods to gather a bouquet of flowers for their dining room table, it was only when he heard the sound of her piercing screams that he realized something was amiss. But he was too late. No sooner had he arrived in the clearing with his sword drawn did he realize that his wife---his beautiful, precious wife---had been cruelly attacked by a group of wandering bandits from the country’s opposing forces.
She died in his arms, and so did their unborn children. Henry was able to swiftly tend to each and every one of the men that had sullied and torn apart his sweetest gift, but there was nothing that could be done for her grievous injuries. Unable to bear the thought of living in a world without his wife, Henry committed suicide alongside her on the forest floor, it was there that the souls of her, their twins, and his own were put to rest.
Except ... for one in particular. Henry was shocked beyond belief to realize that the afterlife wasn’t just a shining set of pearly gates he was granted access inside of, one moment he was bleeding out onto the grass and the next, he was being deemed as an Angel of Light: a powerful, holy being that would serve to protect the human world.
Henry was a soldier in life and he proved to be one in the afterlife as well, for over a hundred years he trained and served as a member of the holy army, he became known and recognized for his good-natured charm and natural fighting ability, as well as his sense of compassion, but nobody knew the real reason he had agreed to serve: his true and unyielding belief in reincarnation, and his desperate desire to one day be reunited with his dearly departed life.
Now, with the existence of angels being made known to the human world, Henry was a natural choice for one of two open slots for council representatives. He’s exceptionally charismatic, and has been working undercover in the human world for the last twenty years as the Guardian Angel of none other than Lilianna Shu Lei: a beautiful human healer that he’s been sworn to protect.
Henry is exceptionally kind, he has an awful tendency to help those around him at all costs, and can often be found ‘saving the day’, meaning he has a terrible weakness for damsels in distress. The only ones in the human world who know his true identity are his fellow council members, as well as select members of the government, he refuses to allow anything to compromise his duty to protect Lilianna. She isn’t aware of it, but he’s been in her life ever since she was a tiny baby girl, it was only when she first attended college that he was able to formally introduce himself to her as Henry Young, an orphan with a lavish inheritance but no family to speak of. He was welcomed with open arms by the Shu Leis, he became something of a surrogate son even as he fell more in love with their brilliant daughter with each day that passed.
Henry knows that he has no business feeling any sort of attraction towards his charge, he’s done his best to deny it for years and, for the most part, does a pretty good job at it.
With that being said, he’s got an incredibly wandering eye. He’s never had a serious relationship---not since his time as a human with his wife---but plenty of flings and one night stands. He’s the sweetest guy you’ll ever meet, but with a natural sort of charm that means he’s got more notches on his bedpost than he can count.
At the end of the day, though, he’s still looking for his wife in every single woman---it’s been more than a hundred years, but he still firmly believes that her reincarnated form is out there somewhere in the world, and he’d do absolutely anything if it meant finding her again.
