winter is dead, long live summer
As the last of the ski hills shut down here in Chamonix the sense that summer is upon us has been strong over the past few weeks. The bag packed full of summer essentials has been raided and the emergency shorts and vest tops have been pulled out to cope with the over night change in temperatures.
Winter has been weird and wonderful. It was a less impacting season that we had expected. There wasn’t as much of an overwhelming urge to be on the hill each and everyday, the snow conditions just didn't encourage that sort of zest for adventure we had hoped for. Occasionally though it dumped, and when it did, it was special. Powder, that somewhat illusive state of snow got its use and we had fun, run, after run, after run. There is something so amazing about waking up, looking out side and taking in all this environment has to throw at you. Its like taking in a lung full of our oxygen, its awakening, restoring, inspiring and so beautiful. Even through the raining days the landscape is so intriguing, never dull, specially on dull days. Nature is wild and all around and this could never be anything but life enhancing and soul enriching.
There is a massive sense of soul cleansing being situated here. Experiencing nature and wilderness and the elements up close and, now, personal. We feel a connection to the mountains, the trees, the trails and the sky. For lack of a better cliché we feel more “at one” with the world.
With the natural turning of the tides and the changing of the seasons, winter is most differently on its way out, but its hard to feel sad when summer offers so much rebirth. There is an excitement in the air, the snows are clearing, the melt water is fuelling the regrowth and generation of colours and smells. We are longing for the things we left behind with the first snowfalls. More than anything we long for the things we couldn't do. The summer opens up a world of adventures through the hills and rivers and roads. Perhaps even a reason to leave the valley.
We will stay close to water but in its more fluid form, stay close to the elements but on a landscape covered in sand, remain outdoors but wear less layers. Surfs up. Let the sunshine.
Long live summer.
