Who is best friends with who?

Sebastian would idolise all the captains but especially one like Picard (or literally does in the text, read the book if you wanna find out)

Look there's queer subtext, Basti is only so strong

Dimae would probably love McCoy, that southern gentleman charm, the way he stands firm on medical decisions, even going so far as to argue with his captain.

The unspoken sexual tension - Dimae ships it

They just have the same core values as medical officers.

Matter and Mariner in a room together would lead to some serious shenanigans (and probably they'd make out, at least).

Sauraxen and Geordi and Data would be an unstoppable engineering team. Between Sauraxen and Data sharing the experience of being seen as something other than what they are (namely property instead of people) and Geordi's blindness and accessibility lining up with the way Wrexi like Sauraxen perceive the world through sound waves. They'd build something. Probably something that will either be the best or supremely dangerous. Either way it'll be fun to find out.

Brruuh would be a sucker for Spock (specifically TOS Spock but I haven't seen SNW Spock so idk?). Between Brruuh loving some introspection and Spock really needing a therapist (and Spock liking cats) I just think it's a friendship made in paradise.

And Chamber would vibe with Seven Of Nine - both fishes out of water and... I can't say more for spoilers

WIP of coice: IPA 1

The new kettle piece from the junk yard — well, new to them — had installed easily, leaving Sauraxen with a spare piece that could be stripped for components. She was sat atop her desk, head rubbing against the stairs every now and again, legs crossed beneath her as she detached cogs, pistons, and wires from the mechanism. Part way through, when Sauraxen had reached a particularly wonky cog that didn’t want to pry free, the air but the upper door to engineering shifted. Sauraxen ignored it. If one of the crew wanted her attention, they would call out. A moo-eow bounced off the walls, rattling through the engines in a way that had Sauraxen on her feet before she fully registered the noise. Stood at the open, upper door to the engineering bay was a racattle snake.

(Im 90% sure there's some seriously dyslexic sentences in there, but we'll all ignore that for now, shall we?)

Happy STS! Would any of your characters keep a journal? And if so how consistently? What style (formatted one or five year journal? Cheap dollar store notebook? Fancy long form journal? Which parts of their life would they find important to write down?

I ended up thinking on this question for ages, because I have never been able to keep a journal, but my wife did when she was practicing for her French A-level (in French, just to be clear). So I asked her what she thought too, because I couldn't imagine it.

She asked, "Surely Basti from IPA1 would."

Which gave me the best idea for a scene so here's a rough one:

"Your logs," the Thial in full aquatic body-armour requested. Basti tilted his head. "My delivery records?" "Nei," the Thial sighed, though as far as Basti knew Thial didn't have a concept of sighing. This Thial in particular did have the most advanced translation software built into xyr suit, though, thanks to being an official IPA something-or-other. "Your day-to-day logs. Your captain's logs." "I have no idea what you're talking about." "Every ship's captain is required to keep daily logs for IPA use." Basti had always thought sci-fi vid captains kept logs for narrative purposes, he'd never considered the value of keeping a record of the daily goings on aboard his ship. What would they say? Date Location Noticed Matter had a third cup of coffee before lunchtime. Will need more soon. He had no idea it was IPA standard. Why had none of his captains told him!

In my Inter-Planetary Alliance novels (upcoming, scifi) there's Chamber.

Chamber is discovered by the crew in the first book in a cryo chamber on an dead ship. None of them, including Chamber know how long she's been there or what planet her people were from.
