How to use Retina mode on your iPad with RetinaPad
As was explained in the FullForce tutorial, there may be times when you still want to use an iPhone app – because the developer never got round to launching an all-in-one version, for instance. In these cases you want to run the app, but tapping on the standard 2x gadget to fill the screen simply gives a soft display with overly large icons and cramped screen space. Full force can do some kind of job at making apps use the full screen, but it isn’t consistent, can’t do graphics, is basically useless for games and has stopped being supported by the developer. Instead, Ryan Petrich focused his attention on new iPhone apps that had support for the Retina display.
The iPhone Retina resolution doubled the original resolution to 640×960 and added a vertical size of 1136 for the iPhone 5. The purpose of RetinaPad, then, is to force iPhone apps into thinking that they are working on a Retina-display iPhone and so use the higher-resolution skins and graphics.
1. Paid-for tweak
Search Cydia for RetinaPad. It costs 2.99$, so go through the authentication and purchase processes, then tap on Install and Confirm.
2. Check an app
So the first thing to do is run an iPhone app to see what it looks like at 2x resolution. Then you can compare it to the RetinaPad version.
3. See the apps
Go into Settings and scroll down to RetinaPad. Tap on Enabled Applications. This is the list of all the iPhone apps on your iPad.
4. Toggle it on
Move the slider to On for the app you’ve just checked. While here, you may as well toggle all the others to On so they can be checked.
5. Examine the app
Now exit Settings and ensure that the app is closed. Then run it again and compare what it looks like when running at 2x now.
6. Toggle other apps
Check the other apps. If there are performance or graphical issues, toggle them off, but the worst that should happen is they look the same.
