Steve Jobs introduces the iPhone in 2007: A Master Presenter at work
Steve Jobs, when introducing the iPhone in 2007 (youtube link here):
"Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along: that changes everything. Apple's been very fortunate; it's been able to introduce a few of these, into the world.
In 1984, we introduced the Macintosh. It didn't just change Apple: it changed the whole computer industry.
In 2001, we introduced the first iPod. And it didn't just change the way we all listened to Music; it changed the entire music industry.
Well, today, we're introducing three revolutionary products of this class.
The first one: a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second: a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third - is a breakthrough internet communications device.
So...three things. A a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a a breakthrough internet communications device."
He then repeated the three things again, after which he said,
"Are you getting it? These are not three separate devices - this is one device! And we are calling it: iPhone. Today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone."
Recall that this was in 2007: there was no (good) phone that had a great music player in it. There was no phone which could do internet properly - remember WAP browsers and the like? The 'internet in your pocket' that you got from those phones were stripped down versions of websites you saw on your computer. And the phones we had kinda sucked too: transferring contacts from the sim card, lousy messaging, and a numeric pad - no touch screen which made everything much, much more easier to use.
And so, this was the perfect way to frame the iPhone: tell people three great functions, which as of yet, did not exist. And then tell them that it was all in one device. Bam!
Brilliant. You can say what you want to say about the man, but Steve Jobs was a master at presenting his products to people in a way that they can really relate to, and connect to.
Seriously, watch one of his keynotes, you will definitely learn at least a thing or two about presenting skills. I recommend the one i linked above, that's one of the best i've ever seen.
