First lunch with Lo the Dowager Allen this New Decade on the day Prince Harry and Meghan step down as “Senior Royals.” After recent excursions to Japan, Ippudo is where Dowager wants to park his derriere. Uncle has made his feelings known about Ippudo. Best Ramen but service lags. Dowager tells Uncle to get over himself - we’re here to have great ramen, not expect miracles on the service front. Our Ippin of Cucumber and Gyoza are fabulous. The Spicy Goma is slightly pickled cucumber topped with special chilli sauce, crunchy garlic & Sichuan pepper - For ramen Dowager had Karaka-Men and Uncle the Veggie Soba. The Karaka Men is thin & wavy ramen in Ippudo’s original tonkotsu broth served with simmered pork belly, bean sprouts, spring onions and topped with a spicy pork miso and roasted cashew garnish. Uncle’s Vegie Soba is served in original vegetable bouillon blended with porcini dashi. It’s all plant-based and thoroughly slurping good but Uncle found there was a bit of an oil slick rising to the surface. Ok, as Dowager points out, you don’t need inattentive waitstaff to fawn over you to enjoy good food. And said waitperson ran after Uncle with his phone which he had absentminded left on dining situ. Back for the second time at Ippudo after their soft opening. They now have new items on their menu which we tried.⁣ ⁣ First off, we had the Bonito Tonkotsu Special Ramen that came which extra Cha Shu pork slices, seasoned bamboo shoots, seasoned egg with gooey yolk center, bean sprouts and nori sheets. At first I was a bit cautious to try it as the first time I had a Bonito based ramen at another ramen shop, it was too fishy for me but I am relieved and delighted that this was not the case. The soup had just the right balance of fishy-ness and umami from the tonkotsu broth which made it delicious to slurp down on its own or with the toppings and noodles. I would however say that the soup is on the salty side which was okay for me as I finished drinking all the soup but my girlfriend found it too salty and she still had about less than half a bowl of soup left after eating all the toppings. ⁣ ⁣ Rating 9.5 / 10⁣ ⁣ Side Note: The fishy taste comes from Bonito, a type of fish which is dried and shaved into flakes. ⁣ ⁣ Next we tried the Wagyu Steak Don. The onsen egg was perfectly cooked. The wagyu steak was juicy, quite tender and flavourful. The wagyu was splashed with some sauce before being served but I feel that the rice needed a splash or two of the same sauce as well because once I eat the steak with the rice and egg, the flavour from the steak and sauce is reduced as the rice had very little sauce in it. ⁣ ⁣ Rating: 7.5 / 10⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Lastly we tried some Yuzu Sake which was refreshingly good. It felt like I was drinking yuzu juice with a fair splash of sake in it. Ippudo Ramen. The first one in the photos is my favourite of all the dishes we tried, the Akamaru Special. The noodles are thin and chewy and soaks up all the flavourful broth but you need to eat it quick right after it is served as it gets soft really quick. You can select the hardness/ level of done-ness of the noodles when you order. I'd recommend going for very hard as the noodle softens over time. The broth is slightly sweet, salty and has a complex umami taste to it which is somewhat porky. I like the slightly smoky and bitter taste of the black garlic oil which goes really well with the taste of the broth. The red coloured miso and meat mixture at the top is delicious as well. I wish they would give more of that. I like their seasoned bamboo shoot too, it was chewy and has a delicious soya sauce seasoning to it. ⁣ ⁣ The second ramen is called the Karaka Special ramen is (Swipe Left to View It). It has a porky broth that is moderately spicy for those who like their food to be be slightly spicy. I forgot to mention for the other ramen above that the cha shu for both ramens is so soft that it easily falls apart if you poke it with your chopsticks.
