#TheWritersDilemma No.15 Are you a writer? Would you consider yourself a wordsmith, which means you are exceptionally skillful with words and choosing the right ones? You know, there are writers who are just great thinkers, not particularly skillful with words, but have ideas to share and stories to tell... . . I think it takes a wordsmith to truly appreciate the skill of writing short impactful stories. With a word limit, you really have to be choosey of a lot of things and compress your idea or story into a smaller package to be received. With longer stories, you can spend/waste a lot more time/space on descriptive writing and say the same thing in a dozen ways. But with short stories, you might only get one chance to make that point! I love writing short stories, and I love writing long ones too. But what I love doing the most, which is what I am doing now is writing story series, which is really a way to tell a long story, but breaking it down in smaller daily bits that are suspenseful! However, I thank God that whenever He has given me a story or post idea, it usually also comes with the format, be it an article, poem, short story, story series or book. This has really helped me in deciding what and how to write, because I love them all! How do you decide whether to communicate your message through a short or long story? Do you tend to do only one type, and if so, why do you think that is? Check out #TheWeddingAndOtherShortStories, my first #compilation of short stories with powerful lessons for #singlesandmarried folk too. It is available only @okadabooks. #TheWritersDilemma No.4 Are you a writer? Are you also well-travelled? Do you find that this helps your writing, when you want to reference well-known places in your stories? I am fortunate to have lived in three different continents in my lifetime, and travelled widely, so I know a few places. It must be harder for those who have never left their country. They must rely on their imagination and what they have watched on television or read in literature to write about places they have never been. However, given the choice, would you rather make up an imaginary place/country or write descriptively about one or two you know well? I would definitely prefer to write a story set in a place I know very well, which is how all my stories are. They are all based in Lagos, Nigeria, citing places of interests that Lagosians will know and relate to. I find it so much easier (and more fun) to write this way. The idea of creating a whole new place to tell a story is like double work. Not only do I need to memorise the intricate details of my characters and their experiences, I must be consistent in my description of the country, otherwise my readers may be confused. It is like the difference between setting up a stage with props or using a real physical house for a video shoot. I guess it depends on what you are trying to create, and if there is nowhere real that will substitute. Where was your last story based in? #iWrite #iBlog #iReview #iPublish #iRead #iPromote #iLove #iCare #iShare #iLike #WritersOfInstagram #BloggersOfInstagram #AuthorsOfInstagram #ReadersOfInstagram #FictionWriters #WritersLife #BloggersLife #AmWriting #AmReading #Fiction #Travel #Imagination #Location #Lagos - #regrann

#TheWritersDilemma No.20 Are you a writer? Are you a thinker? Are you a talker? You may be one, two or all three of these or none at all. But you certainly will be a person with emotion and passion, I hope. Our feelings are very important tools when it comes to self-expression, particularly writing. Even when we write fiction. Our stories become real and relatable when we put some real feeling into it, and sometimes, we have no other resource than our own feelings... When we tap into them, we can write some really deep, powerful stuff. The question has been posed, to write only what you know or exactly how you feel? Which would you rather do and what do you tend towards? I feel that writing only what you know is going to result in a whole lot of head knowledge being shared that may or may not be well received. You will be writing from the position of "I know it all', and though people may take away your wisdom, they may not connect with you deeper. Even in non-fiction, you need to address and tap into your emotions. I usually write like I think and like I talk and like I feel. It can always be edited later, but I find that when I just lay it out there, it flows beautifully and even I am blessed by the release. I discover feelings I didn't know I had and learn lessons about life I may not have learnt, if I didn't bring those thoughts and feelings to the fore, rather than suppressing them by only writing what I know for sure. It is very therapeutic to write this way, and the feedback I get from my readers is that they very much appreciate it. Honesty is refreshing. . . #iWrite #iBlog #iReview #iPublish #iRead #iPromote #iLove #iCare #iShare #iLike #WritersOfInstagram #BloggersOfInstagram #AuthorsOfInstagram #ReadersOfInstagram #FictionWriters #WritersLife #BloggersLife #AmWriting #AmReading #Fiction #NonFiction #WritingStyle #WriteHowYouFeel #WriteWhatYouKnow #Therapeutic #Emotional
#TheWritersDilemma No.1 Are you a writer? Can you relate to this experience where you are wondering if you should leave the family room, to go somewhere quiet and write, or stay and watch a nice movie with your cherished ones? Which activity brings you more joy? What do you usually end up doing? Though I love watching movies, I've recently found that I love the ones showing in my head a little more...because I am in control. But the same scenes keep playing, until I settle down to write the story and it all unfolds before my eyes. However, it's good to watch movies now and then with the family. Not only are you spending time with them, you are also getting fresh ideas for your characters, plots and even lessons to share 😁 #iWrite #iBlog #iReview #iPublish #iRead #iPromote #iLove #iCare #iShare #iLike #WritersOfInstagram #BloggersOfInstagram #AuthorsOfInstagram #ReadersOfInstagram #FictionWriters #WritersLife #BloggersLife #AmWriting #AmReading #Fiction #Movies #FamilyTime
