#TheWritersDilemma No.24 Are you a writer? Are you a published author or aspiring one? Do you dream of seeing your books in print? I know I do 😁 Yes, it would be awesome just to publish an eBook, but some people don't recognise that you're an author until they see your book in print. And then, there are those who only value hardback, and care little for paperback. But it is really an accomplishment to write a book in the first place, not to mention publishing it! I might be imagining it, but when people ask me how many books I've published and I tell them SEVEN feeling chuffed with myself, their eyes widen with respect and awe, until I explain that I have only printed one, being #TheChurchGirl, and they become normal again like "ooh 🙂" "well done 😏". So, as much as ebooks are growing in popularity and respect among avid readers and writers, there is still a whole world that doesn't recognise them as "book publishing". 😣 However, printing is a whole other business. Not only does it require a lot of investment, it requires a lot of FAITH! Faith in yourself that you will make that money back. That the book won't flop but sell well. Faith in your publishers or printers, that they won't tell you stories after you have given them a 70% deposit on a print job. And it also requires that you have a good distribution and marketing strategy that takes into consideration your readers. So, dream all you like, but you should never rush to print. Many successful authors only produce ebooks now. And many also recommend that you can start with ebooks and print as demand grows for your book. That's what I'm trying to do. I already have The Church Girl in print. I would like to print more of my books, but I want to see an improvement in the sales of my print and ebooks first before proceeding. What do you think? Oh good ol’ point and click adventure games... They will never get old even if game industry is striving to make more and more realistic games to be played. There will always be indie companies making them and they are our little time wasters in our big game libraries.

Deponia is no exception. When I first saw the trailer of new game made by Daedalic Entertainment, I was taken away by it. I had to get it. I was not working at the time because of the school and getting money for games from parents was difficult.Time went on and on and I never got change to buy it. Then, about 6 months ago, I was looking game sales and other game related news, where I saw a new game trailer of “Doomsday Deponia”, and after I watched it I instantly remembered Deponia. And so I bought Deponia: The Complete Journey and finished it straight away in a (almost) single playthrough.

Story: 4th wall breaking and funny story with a spice of references

Game starts with you doing tutorial, which tells you how to play the game. After the tutorial, there is a nice little song sung by The Chorus Guys, and after that the real game begins. You seem to play as Rufus, who is a bit braindead and a selfish guy. Rufus has become tired to live besides the endless mountains of junk and wants to escape the place called Deponia to place named Elysium, which he has a plan for that you need to execute. Rufus’s plan seems to misfire and new adventure through Deponia to Elysium shall begin! Story has some nice “plot-twists” (Wink wink) and 4th wall breakers, which makes the story and game even more fun. You will encounter memorable characters throughout the story like Elysium girl Hope, Wenzel (Rufus’s “sidekick”), Captain bozo (The captain of a garbage trawler) and Cletus (Goal's fiancé). Deponia: The Complete Journey has all 3 main trilogy games (Deponia, Chaos on Deponia and Goodbye Deponia) combined into one for those, who wants to full experience the game and the story as a whole.

Gameplay: Point and click game, do I have to say more?

Its point and click adventure with an inventory to store all the items to. In Goodbye Deponia, there is also “3 Rufus Gameplay” which will expand the inventory game even more, because you need to trade items with other Rufuses.

Graphics: Simple drawn 2D art style that makes the game unique

The art style in this game makes it look fantastic, even if the background usually consist junk. Even the junk looks nice. There are so many yet simple little details hidden in background that can go unnoticed if you don’t look carefully.

Soundtrack: Simple soundtrack that fits to the game

Every place in Deponia has its own fitting soundtrack, which makes the world beautiful and explorable. The Chorus Guys will sing a song after every segment of the story and tell a little briefing what has happened and what is about to happen, which makes the game even more memorable.

Cinematics: There is few 2D art style animated cutscenes and some dialogue with gameplay animations

Every little animated cutscene is in right place and even in some of them are little hidden refrences and easter eggs. Detail in the cutscenes doesn’t change from the game world art style and because of that, the cutscenes feel more natural.

Overall: 8/10 Typical point and click adventure with nice story and memorable characters

There’s nothing else to say to it. It’s a well done point and click adventure game and if you’re interested in games like “Day of the Tentacle”, “The Secret of the Monkey Island” or “Grim Fandango”,then this game is an experience for you!

#TheWritersDilemma No.16 Are you a writer? Have you published your first story? What was the reception like? Were your readers begging for a continuation of the story? If you had a choice between doing a spin-off your hit book or a follow up, which would you prefer? For me, I guess it depends on how the hit story ended. Some endings shouldn't be tampered with by extending them with a continuation. But you can definitely do a spin-off, which is creating an entirely new story and drawing some parallels with the old, or even using some of the same characters. . . I was faced with this choice when I concluded #TheChurchGirl story series. I initially extended the story, and continued it into three major parts, before publishing as two books in one. After the last part, when my readers were begging for more, I opted for a spin-off rather than continuing the story with those main characters. My spin-off is my seasonal series #ASmallWorld, which combines my three main stories (including #Broken and #AnEmotionalAffair) into one big never ending story. It's been so exciting, and I've now written two seasons of A Small World. I think I made the best choice. However, I have other spin off ideas for #Broken and #AnEmotionalAffair. I want to tell Danny's story someday, when I am a better writer. I also want to do a sliding doors version of Broken, considering "what if" Promise had made a different decision :) . . #TheWritersDilemma No.10 Are you a writer? Do you have kids? Or even just the one? Do you struggle to make time for them, to do childish things like playing games at home or going to the Park? If you're anything like me, you probably do a lot of your writing at home. And you probably suffer from a lot of guilt, realising that some of your characters are better parents than you! Because though you know they need your attention and quality time, you also need to write these stories, and sometimes, something's got to give! And at those times, the TV makes as good a Babysitter as any, because the kids actually get on with the TV okay. They can hang out for hours and hours without complaining, and best of all, disturbing your train of thought! #TheWritersDilemma No.6 Are you a writer? Are you an Idealist or Realist? Do you have strong passionate beliefs about love, life, work and/or religion? Are you an Activist or Evangelist or neither or both (like me 😉)? . . Whichever you are, I believe that your passions and beliefs will seep into your writing, as they do mine. Even if it isn't conscious, your personality will be translated across the pages of the story you choose to tell. However, do you consciously choose to tell it like it is - so people come to an understanding and form their own opinions - or tell it like it should be, so that they are aided to reach an agreement with your beliefs? Which do you think is more powerful? Honestly, I believe you must do both! And that is what I strive to do in all my writings... By telling it like it is, I make it real and relatable, so readers can connect with the feelings and experiences of my characters. And as an inspirational, Christian writer, I believe I also have the responsibility to tell it like it should be...addressing why and how things go wrong, and what can or should be done to make peace again. A realist telling, though dramatic and exciting, often leaves little inspiration for change in people's lives. And an idealistic telling is often out of touch with reality. But together, they make for mind blowing books that change people's lives while entertaining them. #TheWritersDilemma No.21 Are you a writer? Are you also a Believer? Why do you write? For yourself, for ministry or for business? Well, when I started writing, it was for me. For fun, for necessity and for therapy. Writing was my passion and my release of thoughts and feelings. But, I've always loved teaching and talking about God. So, naturally, I graduated to using my writings to teach others...or to share what I was learning from God with others. It soon became Ministry. Now, my primary purpose in writing is for Ministry, even though I still write for myself, my fun, amusement and therapy. However, since last year, an avenue for Business opened up with Blogging and becoming an Author. I realised that I couldn't just do things the way I had always done them. If I was to grow in reach and influence, I needed to be strategic. I need to apply business sense to this Ministry I have been given, to grow it like a good steward. This has been a challenge, because I have never really been business oriented. I have usually been more charitable in my mind when it comes to money. Plus, there is a real conflict with ministry and money that one must resolve and daily address, so that greed doesn't become the motivation for writing, and money remains a tool of ministry and not a reward... So, right now, I write for all three reasons, with Ministry being my chief reason for being a Writer.
