My sister told me she met someone with a really interesting pupil, one that went sort of horizontal. I said, “oh, I think that’s an iris coloboma!” I showed her some pictures and she confirmed that is what the person had.

How did I know about iris coloboma? Did they teach it to us in medical school? No. They barely taught us any eye pathology at all. I saw it on Tumblr, of course.

Congenital iris coloboma is a hole or defect of the iris. It can affect one or both eyes and causes varying levels of blindness.

So last week one of my professors forwarded me this totally awesome job opportunity with GA Eye Bank and I REALLY REALLY WANT IT!

I emailed the lady my resume and she called me about 5 minutes after I pressed send to talk to me and tell me about the job and it made me want it even more.

I would be PRN on call and get paid per case, but even if I only got 1 case per week I would still make more than I do now working part-time at the daycare.

PLUS, this job would look KILLER on my resume (as said by my professor lol).

Not to mention it's such a bad-assed job and I'm regressing into a whiny, needy seven year old 'cause I want it so bad.

The lady sent my resume along with 2 or 3 others to the office in Atlanta so hopefully I'll get a call soon.

Having Iris Coloboma and all and being in and out of an ophthalmologist's office my whole life, THIS IS TOTALLY MY THING!

These are my eyes. I have a birth defect called Iris Coloboma. Basically what it is, is my eye did not fully form when I was developing. In some people it only affects the iris so they have some light sensitivity in that eye and no real damage to their eyesight. That isn't my case. My right eye has Iris Coloboma, retinal coloboma, micropthalmia, strabismus, and I believe another area is also malformed, but I am not certain. So simply put my eye is smaller than the left one, it crosses inward, my pupil is off center and shaped like an egg, and I am legally blind in that eye. I have spent most of my life hating my eye. I had to wear a patch from about 3 months until I was 9 years old to prevent my brain from ignoring the signals received from my weaker eye. So I have always been self conscious about it. However, I am realizing as I get older, I am now 23, that my birth defect is actually pretty neat and not as many people notice it as I thought. Most people think it is cool when I point it out to them. I am finally starting to embrace who I am. I just wanted to share my weird eyes so other people could see, especially those who share my defect. I have never met anyone else with eyes like mine, but I think it would be pretty cool to.
