Alley cats part 1
I don't really understand how we got to a place where literally every industry has to follow extensive regulations in literally every aspect of what they do but somehow the tech industry gets a pass to do whatever the fuck they want?
Like, the tech industry has been able to do whatever it wants and get away with some of the worst fucking shit imaginable with almost no regulation at all and I don't know how we got here. The internet and AI are being used to facilitate sexual trafficking of children and adults. It is being used to falsify reality, to allow for revenge porn, allow for gambling on the likelihood of a nuclear holocaust, surveil people on an unimaginable level, etc. And we know that if they wanted to regulate this shit, they could because look at how easy it is to shut down images from Gaza, Sudan, etc.
For example, Tesla. It makes cars. But because it's a "tech" company somehow Elon Musk gets to make cars that meet no safety regulations at all. They have doors that will chop your fingers off, they will drive you into other cars, they blow up spontaneously and will auto lock the doors so you can't get out of the fucking car if it's on fire doesn't have to respond to or honor product recalls because their cars blow up (remember the reddit user who has a literal bombed out Tesla sitting in his driveway because it blew up and hasn't been able to get Tesla to respond/replace it for literal years).
Meanwhile, every other car maker has to meet rigorous standards surrounding safety and environmental regulations. They have to undergo extreme testing for airbags, crumple times, child locks, ensuring the trunk won't chop your fingers off by having multiple sensors everywhere, that the brakes fucking work, crash testing dummies, etc. So why does Tesla get to make unsafe vehicles simply because it's considered part of the "tech" industry and not the auto industry? If I was an auto company I would be pissed that Tesla gets to sell its shitty unsafe cars while your cars have to go through 8 million hoops to be approved for sale.
Another example: A lot of AI billionaires want to test psychedelics on people just to fucking see what happens to the point where this administration signed an executive order to expedite this through the FDA. Elon Musk wants to test putting microchips in people's brains for the fuck of it. If actual doctors wanted to do this it would take literal years to get it through ethical board reviews and safety reviews and even then probably would never get there because you have to show what the benefits of studying these things would be and how you would put safe guards in place to ensure no one is being abused and the technology can't be used for harm. So why do these people get to suggest these things and try to do these things in Elon's case with zero fucking oversight simply because they are in the "tech" industry?
I just completed a study on a medical device. This medical device started being tested in humans in 2004. It received FDA approval for postoperative pain control in 2019 after numerous study after study after study showed it reduced opioid use postoperatively. The amount of studies that were done showing its efficacy and safety in order to get FDA approval took FIFTEEN YEARS. The reason I did this study is because there aren't any looking at its use for postoperative pain after c-sections, specifically. And you can't use a medical device for a standard of postoperative pain control in every surgery. You have to show its efficacy for it, hence our study. The IRB approval (and ethical review board to ensure safety and that the study is ethical) for our study took two years and required our team to do a QI initiative followed by a retrospective study to justify why the study was needed despite this medical device being FDA approved for the very purpose we were using it for.
So Elon Musk just...being able to put fucking microchip in monkey brains and recruit people online for one is fucking insane.
Like why is the tech industry somehow this darling that doesn't have to have any fucking regulations at all? And this isn't even getting into the fact that AI is just allowed to build data centers with zero regard whatsoever for the environmental or ecological impacts.
An industry that requires no ethics education, has no regulation, has no oversight whatsoever just gets to do whatever it wants to people and the environment. I genuinely think that part of this is because congress is full of old people who don't understand technology and think the internet is just this nebulous thing that doesn't exist "in real life" so anything connected to it also isn't a tangible thing that can impact our actual lived lives. But I don't think that's the sole reason for all of this. I also think our government has been so ineffectual for literally decades that it hasn't been able to achieve anything that would've led to regulation of the tech industry and now we have an industry that just gets to do whatever the fuck it wants regardless of the impact it has on our lives, the environment, our psychological wellbeing, our privacy and has no ethical obligations guiding what it does.
It' so fucking disgusting.

I never post about medicine anymore but maybe I should. I always say I don't need a therapist, just someone to talk to about work.
I'm having a busy hard week with lots going on.
I got a call from a colleague that a patient of mine needed to go back to the OR for something and then I had to go right in to see a complicated patient with recurrent cancer. There's a multitude of things about this that make me sad and then on top of that I was distracted by having to deal with figuring out the other sorta urgent thing.
My 79 yo little old lady cancer patient asks me how *I* am, then tells *ME* I look tired. Then she always thanks me at the end of the visit and is so sweet even through everything is terrible. I haven't cried in a while but I went back to the dictation area and had some tears.
Then at the end of the day I had to deal with the other thing, which went fine but was still stressful.
Tomorrow I have have to do two add on cases, see patients in clinic and am on call. So.

Embroidered Sculptures Recreate Lifelike Mushrooms, Lichen, and Fungi in Thread
by Grace Ebert - Colossal, February 25, 2022
Amanda Cobbett suspends a singular moment in the fleeting lives of fungi by stitching their likeness in thread. The textile artist photographs and gathers specimens that she brings back to her Surrey Hills-based studio, where she finds fibers to match pale green lichens and golden chanterelles. Using a free-motion embroidery technique on a sewing machine, she then stitches multiple layers onto a piece of dissolvable fabric that, once the organism is complete, is washed away to leave just the mushroom or mossy bark intact. As a scroll through her Instagram reveals, the resulting sculptures are so realistic in color, shape, and size that itās difficult to distinguish the artistās iterations from their counterparts.
Currently, Cobbett is preparing a collection that will head to the Artful Craft exhibition at Make Southwest, which opens on April 2.

Because I'm obsessed with the skeleton as a metaphor for relationships between humans as a whole, I am investing a significant amount of time creating something that mixes the classic imagery of life and death and rebirth. Plus, it's gothic looking and I love a bit of goth all year round. This first set is a proof of concept, I'm working out the colors and which fabric I want to use. I'm not 100% on this blue linen dupe, but I'm pleased with the skeleton embroidery although it's missing it's pelvis piece (oops).
I got the idea- well, I was forced to pivot after 1) I had a lot of these little paper skeletons I cut for a paper art necklace that I absolutely ruined (pictured). And 2) I had no more trays or glass cabs left. I still wanted to make something with these little guys, they're so damn cute. So I decided to combine some embroidery, specifically the padding technique, with my papery sculptures and hopefully, by the end of it I can say Voi-lĆ”...
More progress pictures with another demo soon.
Kakishibu dyed capsule collection by Hiiunomme for Jian Ye "Kakishibu is a traditional fermented tannin dye made from unripe persimmon fruits. Without a mordant, it produces warm hues ranging between red and orange. When combined with an iron mordant it can result in deeply textured brown-black tones. Kakishibu behaves less like a regular dye and more like a coating. It settles on the fabric as a dense, almost lacquer-like layer." ā Hiiunomme

Executive Dysfunction Flossing Tips
as my favorite account on this entire website @brosser-les-dents always says, u gotta remember to brush and floss your teeth.
And brushing? Brushing I can totally do, but flossing has never been a habit I could consistently maintain
However āļø
after a lifetime of struggling to floss at least once a day, Iāve been able to not miss a single day for over 2 years now. Here are my tips:
*note: Iām not a dental professional (or a mental health professional either), these are just some tricks that helped me
Just 4 Teeth Rule
One of the biggest things that has helped me do any kind of task is to just get started. This goes for flossing too. If I donāt want to floss I just tell myself āyou have to do it, but just at the very least 4 teeth. Ok? Okā and then I:
1) roll myself out a long piece of floss
2) wind it up
3) pick 4 teeth that tend to have the most grime and slime
4) start flossing
5) see a BUNCH of plaque come out
6) I think āewā¦thatās grossā¦.if these 4 teeth were like that then I bet more are like thatā
7) I floss like 4 more teeth
8) ew even MORE plaque
9) and then I go āah ok fine. Iāll do the back teethā (those are hardest ones to floss for me)
10) omgā¦.Iāve flossed all my teethā¦.
works like a charm every time folks!!!! Youād think my brain would catch on eventually and realize itās being trickedā¦.and yet!!
Use Colored Dental Floss
personally, I find flossing to be physically exhausting and mentally taxing. It takes a lot of hand dexterity and fine motor skills, and simply put I find the idea of putting my hands in my mouth, even freshly washed hands, pretty gross. If Iām going to put myself through the discomfort of flossing then my brain wants to know that itās at least worth all the trouble.
Colored floss, be it black, pink, blue, whatever youād like really will help you actually be able to see the plaque coming out from in between your teeth and under your gums.
As soon as I see that all this discomfort is actually producing results, Iām suddenly a lot less annoyed with having to floss and I feel more purposeful about doing it and being thorough about it.
I like burst floss bc itās black but whatever color, thickness, type of floss you like, as long as itās not white, should work.
Learn and Practice Flossing
for my people who are physically able to use string floss: I highly recommend watching a video on it. Proper technique really is a game changer, and once you get the hang of it, the task will be a lot less annoying. I promise š«¶
Hereās one that I like but thereās plenty out there:
To Reduce Initial Bleeding, Try Incorporating a Flossing Bristle Toothbrush
Ok, I want to be so clear, A FLOSSING BRISTLE TOOTH BRUSH IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR ACTUAL FLOSS
I started using a flossing bristle toothbrush to help my gums transition from not flossing regularly to flossing everyday. These brushes typically have extra soft bristles and are designed to massage the gum line. Personally, I use them in addition to a normal soft bristle tooth brush I use for the surfaces of my teeth but Iām just extra
You need to use these properly to actually get the benefits from them, but if something preventing you from flossing is the initial discomfort or bleeding as a result of not flossing for a while then, in my experience, these types of brushes help. I still use them even as someone who flosses daily because I like being very thorough with the interior gum line since thatās where I tend to get cavities. But for stimulating your gums while youāre still getting the hang of flossing I think theyāre a good option to look into. They also feel great, which helps.
Find What Makes It All Worth It For You
I mentioned earlier that colored floss that shows the plaque coming out makes me feel more purposeful about flossing, but if I had to say what actually motivates me to do my whole routine in general (tongue scraping, flossing, brushing) itās the clean feeling in mouth when all the gunk is finally gone. When my breath smells like nothing and my saliva tastes like nothing and I swipe my tongue across my teeth and I donāt feel any grime? SO GOOD.
If thereās something like that for you: waking up with less stank breath, feeling more comfortable when youāre talking to people up close, etc whatever having a regular dental care routine can help you accomplish, reminding yourself of that when youāre doing something a little unpleasant, like flossing, can help at least a little bit.
