“So I see you’re the designated driver this evening, huh?”
IT IS FINALLY HERE!
The classics are coming back with the coming release of beyond good and evil 2- a deeply anticipated game from the depths of Ubisoft.
From what we can see of the cinematic trailer, we still have the rebellion fighting against the corruption rife through society, we still have the beautiful and bizarre universe - but this time perhaps not from the view of Hyllis - and we still have those piercing green eyes - but not belonging to Jade.
The cult classic, Beyond Good and Evil, was released in 2003, it follows Jade, Pey’j and Double H’s adventures through a war torn planet named hyllis, we see them fight through corruption and terror that covers their world due to attacks of the DomZ, a semi-biological group of alien monsters. We know that the fight against the DomZ has been an ongoing battle for years, the conflict spread across the galaxy, and we are well aware that Jade and Pey’j both came to Hyllis to seek shelter from the attack of these monsters. From the trailer and limited information from Ubisoft, who own the franchise, we can infer that we will follow the early rebellion, fighting the initial stages of the galaxy’s DomZ take over - long before they nestle in on Hyllis.
We can expect dealings with heavy issues, including, but not limiting to genetic manipulation, slavery, corruption, the formative stages of the Domz, and Piracy (but as per usual, the pirates are the goodies); the original game was not short of dark issues, including human trafficking, abduction and malfeasance of police, but the new game appears to be travelling even deeper into the ideas which set the game into the fan’s hearts.
Beyond good and evil 2 is set before Jade’s birth in a solar system called System 3, during the 24th century, System 3 is yet unknown to us, but from the trailer, it appears to be the home of the key to the interplanetary fight, (and likely the key to Jade’s birth) we can expect our rag tag group of pirates that is the rebellion to venture through urban scrawl and stunning graphics to make the turning point in the war.
The cinematic trailer, a precursor to a release date includes a lot of swearing, indicating that the game will likely have a very adult feel, it also highlights a black heroin named Shani (hint to lovers of the original), marking the second time the game has opted for a non-caucasian and female hero in a market that is otherwise dominated. We also see the introduction of Dakini, a character who is thought to be related to Jade given her poison green eyes, but only the actual release can confirm it.
It is the first substantial announcement for release of the game, and has the original fans, and perhaps new fans reeling in excitement. Michel Ancel, the game’s director has been hinting at a sequel to beyond good and evil almost since the release of the original game, but due to underselling of the original game, his plans for a full universe of beyond good and evil have been put on hold as he was unable to get the project funded and off the ground, now that we have a new trailer, we can expect to see the franchise expand rapidly, hopefully completing even more than the 3 part story that he originally planned.
Keep your eyes peeled for more information about BGaE 2, it is likely to be one of the best games of this decade.
