Does Tumblr know that the juggling meme showed up in the Irish animated short film nominated for the 2026 oscars?

Anyways the film is called Retirement Plan, directed by John Kelly and voiced by Domhnall Gleeson (yes that Domhnall Gleeson) and was entirely done in Moho. The whole thing is 7 minutes long and it's on Disney (might just be on the Irish version but I know yous all know how a VPN works)

Gonna watch “Song of the Sea” (2014) (the animated film by Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon) later today since I’ve been thinking about it recently (and also cuz one of my moots posted about it too) and also cuz it’s on Netflix too.

Up until today, I haven’t seen the film since I was really really young, so I’m super excited to see it again fr!

Also, fun fact: this was probs one of the first films ever (along with the Irish children’s animated series “Puffin Rock”, also made by Cartoon Saloon, which I also saw and grew up with as a young kid) where I heard the characters with Irish accents (since ofc the film takes place in Ireland), and tbh it did admittedly confuse very young me lol (in a curious way I mean), since I was so used to hearing American and British accents pfffftt 🤣🤣😭😭. Like, I remember probably thinking when I was watching the film :

“wait the characters talk kinda funny….it sounds American but not really? huh 👁️👄👁️?”

To any Irish people seeing this, please forgive me for my ignorance, I was literally a child when I first saw this film and I didn’t know Ireland was a country that exists when I was very young at the time lmao 😭😭

Wolfwalkers | Queer Kid Representation?

I've had a thought, and it's about this GORGEOUS film, Wolfwalkers, which I absolutely recommend to everyone! And that thought is based around the ambiguity of the two main characters relationship to each other. Easily passed off as "friends" or "found sisters", and that’s a valid interpretation, but the animation really doesn't seem to imply that; It definitely seems to have a "romantic" air about it, for want of a better word, though never stated. I thought it was beautiful. But it also reminded me of my old internalised homophobia, especially when I see it echoed a lot online right now.

Even a decade ago, if the discussion of child characters being queer or talk of them having crushes on other kids came up, I might have thought "god, no! How could you sexualise children?! I'M gay and even I'M not okay with that! Let kids be kids! This feels creepy". But why? It wasn’t a discussion about kids doin’ th’deed - it was kids having crushes on each other; exactly what I had as a child. I had a crush on Princess Jasmine when I was 5. I had a crush on Spinelli from Recess when I was 10. I had a crush on that kid from the Bomfunk MC’s Freestyler video, f’christ sake - Kids GET crushes! So... why were mine wrong? Why were mine creepy? Why were mine the ones that you have to hide away? Why wasn’t mine just “kids being kids”?

The dichotomy was hammered home for me when I saw it pointed out that, within the film, two other characters exchange flowers and it's just A GIVEN that they're in a relationship; maybe even married! The two girl characters exchange flowers, but that must mean they're "sisters" or "just good friends" and if you see anything else beyond that you're just dirty and wrong for sexualising kids - Even though both relationships did the exact same innocent, sweet act, the only one that gets to be considered as authentic is the straight one.

It just sucks. It sucks that queer kids don't get to be kids with crushes, and they don't get to see themselves portrayed in media because being anything other than inherently cishet is ADULTS ONLY. It sucks that you have the likes of Ponyo, a film about literal 5 year olds, showing the story of a little boy and a little girl loving each other and everyone fawns over how adorable and sweet and innocent it is, but the second the suggestion of anything not heterosexual comes in, then it's corrupt. It's inherently sexual. It's pushing an agenda. I don't even know if I have a point here that anyone can agree, disagree or relate to. Bottom line is, watch Wolfwalkers. It's beautiful, it's Irish animation, it's folklore, it's worth your time, no matter how you interpret it <3

"The Secret of Kells" is so aesthetically pleasing! ✨ It definitely has a certain (Irish) charm, the story itself is quite unusual, and the animation is very different from other modern animated films.
