St. Brigid is an incredibly important and inspirational saint for the Irish people, the Irish diaspora, women, poets, children with abusive fathers or an unstable home, healers, blacksmiths, firefighters, midwives, people giving birth, dairy workers, chicken farmers, sailors, scholars, nuns, pro-choice acitivists, women's ordination activists, travellers, AND MORE! 📚

You may already know that there are heavy connections between the Irish goddess Brigid and St. Brigid. The pagan Brigid is a triple goddess, and not in the "maiden, mother, crone" way. She is Brigid the healer, the smith, and the poet. She is a goddess of fire- the inner fire, the lifeforce, the hearth, the fire of the forge, and the fire of inspiration. In fact, her name means "vitality" or "strength." Imbolg is her holy day. 🔥

St. Brigid is a canonized Catholic saint who's said to be the "Mary of the Gael," showing just how relevant she is to the Irish people. She's started her own monastery and was a travelling missionary. She's especially known for her generosity. She's often depicted as holding a shepherd's staff, something only bishops are portayed with in iconography. As it happens, Brigid may have been (and I believe that she was) one of the first ordained female bishops within the Catholic church. 😇

Now, many Catholics will insist that St. Brigid is a serpate human person from the Brigid of mythology, and many pagans will insist the same. There's debate surrounding the literal historical existance of a human saint named Brigid. My personal belief system is syncretic. It's obvious that St. Brigid's life stories have taken heavy inspiration from pagan tradition. There are some obvious differences as well. It's my personal belief that Brigid can and will express herself in whichever way her people, and any people, will recieve her. Back then it was pagan spirituality and a goddess culture. As time marched forward the Catholic church became Ireland's favorite inlet to the Divine. Brigid is a goddess of multiple persons and infinite possibilities. I don't think it's too much of a jump to veiw the two women as emanations of the same personality. It's also been shown time and time again that Irish folklore has transformed and survived through Catholicism. The love for Brigid is no exception. 💚

Here are some prayers you could use for your novena leading up to her feast day, Feb 1st. To pray a novena, you simply select a prayer or prayers to St. Brigid that speak to you, and pray them for nine days at the same time each day. A candle lit in her honor during your prayers (or even a perpetual flame, if you know your fire safety and wanna get fancy) is a nice touch but not required.🕯

Brigid and Sigyn

I am listening to Kenneth W. Harl's Great course on The Vikings (audible) and when talking of the Irish and the Norse relations, he states that it is very possible that their pantheons got influenced by each other.

And then I start thinking of Brigid.

Brigid whose husband was very handsome but seen as untrustworthy.

Brigid whose son got murdered.

Brigid who is seen as a triple deity

Brigid who is associated with Spring

Brigid who is associated with fertility, smithing and healing.

Brigid whose father is the "great god"/main god of Irish mythology.

Brigid who is associated with prophecies and music

Brigid WHO IS OFTEN DEPICTED WITH A BOWL

And then, I think of Sigyn and the little we know of her/the few theories we have about her

Sigyn whose husband Loki is very handsome but seen as untrusworthy

Sigyn whose kids got murdered

Sigyn who is said to have three facets (young, adult/bride, older/widow mourning her kids)

Sigyn whose mother might be Freyja, goddess of fertility

Sigyn who so many of us associate with the Dwarves (Narvi and Vali are Dwarven names ^^') and so with smithing

Sigyn who is also associated with healing

Sigyn who might be associated with Spring (theory I have seen around and makes a lot of sense with her being under the ground during the long winter before Ragnarok ^^')

Sigyn who could be daughter of Odin - because of his "Father of Victory" kenning... Or maybe just stepfather (XD)

Sigyn who is associated with Seidr and Galdr

Sigyn whose bowl is very well known ^^'

Now, I am NOT saying that Brigid and Sigyn are the same goddess. Of course not.

However, could have they influenced each other? Could Sigyn be one of the three facets of Brigid?

Sigyn is a deity of Victory. Was her cult more important when the Irish and the Norse met, and found a welcoming ground on the Green Island, and from there, the Irish people might have accepted her and remoddled her/mashed her up with their own goddess Brigid?

Snorri's Edda was written in 1200 AD. If Kenneth W. Harl is to be believed, the Norse gods already existed in 1200 BC. Which means that there was A VERY LONG TIME before all those tales were written, and the Gods evolved a lot, their importance changing with time... (Odin was not as important as first!!! ^^')

I guess we'll never know. But I find this theory interesting :)

She is an ancient archetype that has a lot of similar goddesses. Your chart has a very clear dominant element, and there's only one other in a few other placements. That dominant element might be the key to searching goddesses that resonate with your essence.

You should definitely look into goddesses associated with prophecy and light.

Áine_ Celtic(Irish) goddess of love, summer, light, heat, the sun and the moon, wealth, sovereignity, also recognized as "the queen of the fairies".

In Ireland, families were thought to have been descended from the goddesses. Áine is one of them (which is similar to a hindu goddess of an important placement in your chart).

Áine is said to love instrumental music, bonfires(especially if they're lighted on midsummer) and horses. (This needs more proof and I'd encourage you to research for clarity🤍)

Probably the most famous myth about it her is a tragic one of her and the King of Munster_ Ailil Aulom. He forced himself on her, raped her and Áine bit off his ear.

The old Irish law could not permit a King to have a less than perfect appearance and an incomplete body, so he lost his power.

This myth shows Áine's rule over sovereignity, especially female sovereignity. She can grant and remove power.

I did not intend this but two of your goddesses share similar myths that resonate with an important placement in your chart.
