It had been a week since the city fell to the chaos. Of course Szayel had seen it coming, the fights over resources, the struggles for power. It wasn’t the first city to fall either, as only few remained now that the Cordyceps epidemic had lasted for half a decade.
It was still dangerous. Szayel hadn’t gone in right away, preferring to wait for the most volatile to kill themselves off in the ensuing riots. Then the survivors, so used to having an overlord to care for them, succumbed to the fungus one by one, and this is where he came in.
The military stockpile of rations, medicine, and munitions was in a perilous trip to the center, but Szayel knew it was his best bet to get new supplies. He was one man; he could slip in and slip out. He parked his rarely used car off to the side, ready to load it with what he could carry.
Carefully, pistol in hand, he snuck through the compound. It was eerie, seeing it like this—one place once bustling with people, now desolate, corpses both untouched and infected the only sign that life had been here.
Gunshots punctuated the silence, and Szayel tightened the grip on his gun. He wasn’t alone, after all.
A team of three raiders had a single man holed up, who looked to be ex-military, and worse for wear with the amount of blood he was covered in. Szayel’s face twitched involuntarily. These were the scum of the earth. Sneaking from shadow to shadow, he made his way toward the stockpile. Taking aim he shot two, using the chaos to make his way in.
Szayel moved swiftly, grabbing the injured man and pulling him into the store room and shutting the door behind them.
“Your kind headed out a week ago. What are you still doing here. Deathwish?”
