Definitely just read the phrase "[character] painting himself on a horse" and wondered why he was painting on a horse. But people do all kinds of weird things.

Then I realized the intention was not someone painting a self-portrait onto a living animal, but making a painting on canvas of himself riding a horse.

WHY IS ENGLISH LIKE THIS
