there's a weird amount of dissonance because I work with people who are extremely milquetoast average americans who "don't do politics haha" and then proceed to tell ice jokes every single day in the most horrifically casual callous ways possible. Like it is actually violent and cruel to "joke" about the garbage man getting taken by ice, that is an extremely realistic possibility as to why no one has picked up the work trash for a week. It's violent and cruel to giggle and say shit like "well enjoy the mexican restaurants while you can!". Like it makes me wanna scream and slap people like how is literally any of this shit fucking funny to you? how is it funny to you that ice is now the biggest (in terms of funding) police force in the world? their budget is now larger than nearly every single country on earths military budgets excluding the us and china? The real secret to understanding the minds of the general american public is simple: they are deeply selfish and casually cruel people to whom "it's a joke" is sufficient explanation and they shouldn't ever be made to feel discomfort for being mean assholes because that just means "you don't know how to take a joke". and in between those gut wrenching moments of offhand cruelty my boss loves to talk about his disney cruise vacations and I have to stand there nodding and smiling as if internally I'm not screaming "you pay me $14 an hour you fuck I eat oatmeal for most meals and steal toothpaste at the grocery store no I'm never going to be on a fuckass cruise ship you don't even pay me enough for a single good meal I should skin you alive".
