ace’s understanding of his own innocence/youth is so interesting because luffy is A Kid to him in a way he’s never gotten to be but also luffy and him are the same in every regard. father who is reviled/persecuted same neglectful upbringing same violence after a point . ace never got to be a kid the way luffy was and he’s dedicated to protecting luffy’s innocence without ever resolving the cognitive dissonance of his own

single funniest part of op to me is that after everything that happened at enies lobby somehow rob lucci and co swung themselves a promotion. like imagine you blow 5 years undercover you lose nico robin and some 17yo nobody wipes the floor with you. they put crocodile in jail for that shit and rob lucci got his friendgroup pipelined to cp0 HOW .
dadan and ace's relationship is soo fucking good because dadan is so powerless. she's broke she's a woman she's a criminal and garp can weaponize his structural and literal power over her to force her into motherhood against her will . and she imparts that powerlessness on ace out of resentment but its also an attempt to protect him in her way (“your father's death changed an era, when you become a man like that you can do whatever you want." aka you're a nobody, you can't win this, stand down)
ace reinforces to dadan that she will never actually escape the societal roles expected of her as long as the system exists and dadan does her best to impart on ace that he is powerless as he is and fighting back wont save him from the crushing gears of the wgov so he may as well not try . and isnt that really what motherhood is all about
