How did you come by being a consultant and for what? I would love to travel. it is one of my dreams in life :)

Hi!! So I actually kind of fell into it by accident. I was getting my masters in computer science and realized halfway through that I didn’t want to spend my life locked up in the basement writing code. (I’m not the most social person, but I realized that I am not a software development person either).

I ended up applying for jobs that required a tech background but were also business-y, for lack of a better term. Which turned out to be consulting.

(for the record, there’s a difference between being employed as a consultant and being an actual consultant -- I am not a self-employeed consultant, I work for a company. Which means I don’t have to do the legwork for getting to a new place, they basically just tell me where to go.)

For me, what allowed me to travel so much, is that I told my company when they first hired me that I was willing to travel 90-100% of the time. That kind of became my niche. Again, I think I got a bit lucky because right after they hired me, an international project came up. Another person who was hired at the same time as me got sent to much less glamorous places...

I guess if you want to travel, I’d look for a global consulting company that actually offers travel, and be vocal about willingness to travel. Ask if they have international travel opportunities, and if those are offered to everyone, or just people in that region.
