Recent Tragedies: Remembering Our Humanity Instead of Our Differences
Even though hundreds have died a violent death, including innocent black man Alton Sterling, it seems that we're not talking about it as much as we should, myself included. While I can't speak for others, I can say for myself that I stayed quiet for so many reasons: race and religion are touchy topics; I wasn't directly affected; it's not my place to speak. A lot of that stems from my tendency to emphasize the differences between me and other people, so here's me trying to remember my humanity and why it's important that I do. P.S. I normally stray away from writing about race or religion because it's well known that those topics are ones that are easier to step on people's toes with. I'm afraid I will misstep or will come off as ignorant, but maybe it's that fear that has made me part of the problem and is part of the reason why these tragedies continue to happen. So this is my way of thinking about these issues and spreading my thoughts in hopes that doing so will make you think too.
Lately, a lot of people have been dying. Dying in violent ways– suicide bombings, car bombings, shootings, hacked by knife stab after knife stab. And all that covers the recent ISIS terrorist attacks, but then what about the not terrorist attacks?
