Cristo de la Luz - Toledo This former mosque was built in 999-1000, when Toledo was part of the Ummayad Caliphate of Córdoba (929-1031), that dominated much of the Iberian peninsula. The small building of brick and rubble was most likely built for private devotion. In Moorish times it was often referred to as ‘Mezquita Bab-al-Mardum’, but after the conquest of Toledo by Alfonso VI (c. 1040-1109), King of Castile and León, it was turned into a church, San Cristo de la Luz. In the late 12th century an apse was added. This apse was built in the so-called Mudéjar style, that incorporates many elements of the arts and architecture of the Moors. The original ‘mezquita’ was clearly influenced by the architecture of the capitol of the Ummayad Caliphs, such as the famous great mosque of Córdoba. #cristodelaluz #islamicarchitecture #islamicarts #islamicart #toledo #spain #spaintravel #spaintourism #españa #lamancha #castilelamancha #toledospain #mezquita #mezquitacristodelaluz #sancristodelaluz #architecture #mosque #moorish #moorisharchitecture (bij Cristo de la Luz) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBIn0BZHY0B/?igshid=jmqthaq5i58c
