Dear Mom,

I’ve been busy lately a lot of stuff has happened. Good things, but I’ve been pretty beat so I haven’t been able to write. Though suppose you can’t read these anyway huh? I’ve written tons of letters, can’t send any of them out yet, but you can read every one of them when I see you again.

Hopefully you’re not too worried…

It’s been a little scary, but I’m managing alright. I’ve got a roommate and everything, don’t see him much. He seems pretty frosted all the time.

I think I made my first friend down here, his name is Jin. He’s real smart great with electrons. Think you’d like it here, real radioactive places.  

Sometimes, I wonder…do you think dad would be proud of me?

I’ll be sure to write again soon mom. Tell everyone I miss them.

He frowned at the trail of sheets leading out of the bedroom, stooping to pick up the cloth as he followed the trail back to the piano. Leaning against the door frame with an armful of fabric, he called out to the pianist, “I’m pretty sure I told ya to stay in bed.”

Dee startled, the pencil in his hand dropping with a clink against the piano bench. “I had this catchy little tune in my head, and I just had to get this down—”

"—Alright, I got it. The muse strikes again." Isaiah raised his hands in defeat. "I’ll make ya some soup. Get yer song down, cool cat."

He stepped a little fraction closer to Dee, the pianist's shoulder bumping against his arm. He tapped his fingertips tapping gently against the other man's wrist, before the younger man turned his hand up to hold Isaiah's. This time, all signs pointed to them doing it right.

"Are ya sure 'bout this, Dee?" A mischievous quirk of the lips up, as he tugged at his collar. All that remained was for one of them to reach up and knock on the door. One simple movement to either set the house of cards ablaze, for better or ill.

"I didn't even put on a tie for the occasion."

He doesn't seem like the kind of guy to fuck around with, either, which is always nice. Real poetic, maybe he'd be good to have around. He could recite poetry and help me with the roses. Who the hell knows.

"You’re on in five!"

Dee shouts back something—it doesn’t matter what, as long as he responds—and looks down at the mess he’s made of his shirt. Leaving never felt so good as it did half an hour ago, when he was choking the life out of that no-good sonuvabitch, but breakups are always just so messy.

Four minutes left. He scrubs the blood of his hands as best he can, the soap streaking with red-tinted bubbles as he hurries. Out, damned spots, out, and he buttons up a new shirt with dripping-wet fingers as the hand on his watch counts three minutes remaining.

One minute left, and he’s running to the stage with blood under his fingernails but there’s nothing to be done about that. Thirty seconds until showtime, and someone smooths back his dark unruly hair, pinching his cheeks to bring up the colour. The curtain falls, the crowd roars.

He smiles widely, and the show goes on.
