Sarah Pratt's butter cow is an icon of the Iowa State Fair and as a special treat in honor of Iowa State's 100th Homecoming she has agreed to come to campus and create a Butter Cy. "It was a little bit of a challenge but it was fun to venture out and try something a little bit different," said Pratt. "I've never sculpted a mascot before." But as with any new project it was not without its challenges. "There's also proportions for children and adults and so forth, but mascots don't follow any of those guidelines. So you know trying to find the proportions and get it all in proportion to the body," said Pratt. While the mascot is made of nearly 330 pounds of butter, in the true farmer fashion nothing will be left to waste. "Whenever I'm done with a sculpture I do take the butter and put back into storage and so we do our very best to save every bit of butter and reuse it for as many years as we can," said Pratt. "So this is brand new butter on Cy and it will be put into buckets and taken to the Iowa State Fair and it will become a sculpture there. Perhaps it will become the butter cow." The Butter Cy will be finished Friday afternoon and on full display Saturday. But as for next year's Iowa State Fair we asked for a hint as to what to expect. "I feel like some of the other breeders might like to see something else so maybe I'll venture out and do a different breed this year," said Pratt. "But as far as the other sculpture I don't have any idea yet."
