Silly little AU where Buck is a “fortune teller” for a traveling carnival

It’s all fake,of course, but most people just want to be entertained or have their curiosity slaked and that’s easy enough. And for the people who want to truly believe, he’s charismatic and empathetic enough to pull it off as the real deal.

It’s not what Buck imagined himself doing, but it keeps him fed and he gets to travel while he figures out his future.

The carnival travels to [insert place where army is stationed] and there he meets fighter pilot Tommy.

Buck offers the usual crystal ball, tarot card, or palm reading as Tommy takes a seat across from him. Tommy chooses a palm reading and he sets his hands on the table. Buck doesn’t know why but he can’t stop staring as he takes one of Tommy’s big, rough hands in his own.

Some people want a full reading, some people are interested in a specific part of their life. When Buck asks, Tommy confesses that he’s lonely—the feeling hard to ignore when everyone around him receives letters from loved ones back home—and he wants to know what’s in store for his love life.

So Buck starts with Tommy’s heart line. He holds Tommy’s hand, palm up, in one of his own and with the other, he drags his finger across the line. Tommy’s palm twitches under his touch.

All of a sudden Buck feels a searing pain in his head. He squeezes his eyes shut and he squeezes Tommy’s hand—or Tommy squeezes his, he’s not sure.

All he knows is that there are visions flashing through his mind. Of Tommy and of himself and them—together—and Buck has no idea where they’re coming from and none of it makes sense but they both look happy.

The images stop and his mind stops spinning and he gasps as he opens his eyes, both of his hands clutched in Tommy’s.

Tommy’s wide-eyed, but lets out a breath of relief. He asks Buck what he saw—if there’s anyone out there he’s destined to meet—to love?

How is Buck supposed to say, I think it’s me?
