There are few things that Rose loves more than quiet moments by the lake, up in the remote highlands. Quiet moments with her princess, away from the world.
The small terrace has long belonged to the royal family, but up here in the mountains, far from civilization, it’s rarely used. They’ve been the first people here in a decade, and while it took considerable effort to make the place livable, it’s been worth it. Cosy and snug, with nobody else apart from the seraphim, it’s a glimpse of a life beyond their duties, beyond the madness of their daily lives.
A life where Rose can wake up in the morning, and see Alisha still abed next to her. Days where their most intense worries are bickering over who does the dishes and what to eat for dinner. Where they can spend hours walking alongside the lake, and Rose picks leaves out of Alisha’s hair, laughs when a squirrel drops on her shoulder and her girlfriend lets out the most un-knightly squeal. Pretending that they are just two young women without the weight of the world on their shoulders.
A life where Alisha spends the afternoon combing through Rose’s hair.
It’s not something Rose normally pays attention to. She isn’t sure when she decided to let her hair grow out (probably around the time when Alisha mentioned that she liked the colour of Rose’s hair), and normally she just lets it fly freely or ties it up in a bun. But it’s during times like this that Alisha smiles, asks her to sit, and threads her fingers through red locks as she tries to fix the latest Hyland fashions on Rose’s head. Her princess talks about life at court, in the barracks, about her time travelling in between the countries and villages, or sometimes sings the tunes that the Sparrowfeathers have taught her, over the years.
It’s a lovely afternoon. The sun is out, the light rippling off the water. The lake is calm, reflecting the mountains around them, making this space seem so much more vast. The seraphim are out today- Edna’s going to teach them the Normincarena, she remembers Lailah declaring happily as she dragged Zaveid out the door. So it’s just the two of them, seated on the patio overlooking the lake, and Alisha hums as she works.
The atmosphere is calm. The rhythmic pressure is almost enjoyable, in a way. Rose closes her eyes, drifting in absolute bliss as she listens to Alisha’s soothing voice, smiles at Alisha’s touch. Almost wishes the moment could stretch on forever.
Then, subtly, the pressure lifts. The fingers stop working.
Rose opens an eye. She can hear Alisha’s easy breath, but the princess hasn’t resumed braiding, and her humming has drifted off into silence. Yet, other than that, nothing’s amiss. The sun is still shining, the mountains look as calm as they ever were. A gentle breeze ripples along the surface of the lake, sending shimmering sparkles along the deep blue surface.
Rose turns, slightly. “Why’d you stop?”
“This is all very lovely, isn’t it, Rose?”
Alisha’s voice is calm and gentle. Soft, like the leaves rustling in the breeze. Her gaze is turned out towards the lake, blue eyes crinkling in the afternoon light. Her expression is pensive, her smile quiet.
Rose frowns. “What’s wrong?”
Alisha laughs, then. “Nothing’s wrong, Rose.” She turns to face her, smile widening. “Nothing.”
Everything clicks. Rose glances out at the lake, at the mountains, at the beautiful wide world around them. Everything truly is as it should be, no hint of malevolence or anguish or hate running through the earthpulse. No leaf or breeze out of place.
Alisha’s fingers thread through Rose’s. Shyly, she murmurs, “I wish most of our days could be like this. Where you don’t come home with blood on your gloves, and I don’t want to cry from promising and bargaining for the safety of the world.”
Rose breathes. “That we could stay here forever?”
Alisha nods. “That we could stay here forever.” The look in her eyes is so wistful, so distant, that Rose wants to reach out to bring her home. “That we can pass the days together, spend our lives like this. Be happy.”
Be happy. It always stuns Rose how hard that simple statement is to achieve. That so much hate and hurt comes from that singular pursuit, that the world they live in is so contradictory to deny people, both humans and seraphim, that ability to just be happy…
She runs a thumb over Alisha’s hard knuckles. Draws in a deep breath of fresh mountain air, takes in the steady warmth of Alisha’s callused hand in hers.
They’ve worked so hard, haven’t they? Fought, day in and day out, against foes both seen and unseen. Against all the pain and anguish that malevolence seeps through the land. Sometimes Rose wishes, too, when she holds Alisha tight in the early hours of the morning, the scent of fresh blood still heavy in her nose. When she knows that she can’t stay by her princess’s side, that she would have to leave before dawn.
Times like those, she wished she could spirit Alisha away too, stay here forever.
She studies Alisha. Takes in the lips lifted in peaceful joy, the eyes bright and warm. No trace of the usual sadness that lingers at the corners, and gone is the tight tension that winds its way through her shoulders.
If only it were that easy. If only they could ignore what was going on in the world around them, below them, up here in their mountain refuge.
But well, that wouldn’t be them, would it?
She presses a kiss into Alisha’s hand. “You wouldn’t be truly happy,” she whispers, drawing her princess’s eyes. “You’d want to make the rest of the world just as calm and happy and peaceful as this place. So that everyone, not just us, can be happy. That’s what we’re fighting for, isn’t it?”
Alisha laughs, bright and warm and tinkling. “You’re right, of course.” The soft devotion in her eyes speaks volumes. “Thank you, Rose. You always make things so simple.”
Rose grins. “You don’t make it easy.” She leans in, catches Alisha in a kiss.
Her princess’s stifled protest fades into a soft hum, and Alisha winds her arms around Rose’s waist, tugging her closer, pulls the half-done braids away as she threads her fingers through Rose’s hair. And it feels so perfect- with Alisha in her arms, soft lips pressed against hers. If there was a heaven, Rose thinks, this would be her salvation.
“You’re so steadfast,” she whispers in between kisses- on Alisha’s temple, her cheeks, her neck. “You’ve endured so much. I wish I could give you everything you want.”
Alisha’s breath ghosts against Rose’s skin. A faint flush colours her cheeks, her kiss-swollen lips pressed in a lovely smile. “You have, Rose,” she tells her, eyes bright with love.
And it’s so beautiful that Rose has to kiss her again, tell her again, so that she knows- that no matter how long the road, how hard the fight… it’d be worth it if Alisha is truly happy.
They spend the afternoon like that, basking in the paradise around them in between kisses. Side by side, Rose leaning against Alisha’s shoulder, her princess’s solid weight her anchor in the dream around them. She doesn’t know how much time passes, but it doesn't matter. Not when now is all that matters.
Eventually, Alisha speaks, breaking the peaceful silence between them. “We should head back soon. Empyreans know how much trouble has stacked up without us around.”
Rose groans. Despite all she said about duty, about their dream, she likes the present, with Alisha running fingers through her hair, and her love seeping through every touch, every smile.
She wants to treasure this forever, to give them the strength for the coming days. To remember what it is that they’re fighting for.
Rose puts on her best pleading face. “Just a few more days?”
And Alisha, strong and beautiful, laughs. “Of course.”
