His lips are on hers. Soft, but not tentative. His hand, on the back of her neck, draws her up, bending her to his will. And it occurs to her that it reminds her of the first time they'd ever kissed.
It must have been more than a decade ago, now. She was fourteen so he must have been fifteen. Cyri had been training after hours, most everyone else had left for the day, but not Connell. He offered to spar with her, teach her a few things.
He was a year older, had been at the academie longer—and still her skill with a blade outweighed his already. Which she'd known even as she agreed.
She liked him, even then. He had an easy smile and charm that she'd learned in the years since usually came with wealth and status. It wasn't that he had any real confidence or social grace, it was that no one had the mind to make him insecure about such things. He walked into every room as though he belonged there because he had never once been told he didn't.
