I've been having trouble following the CAB protests - all I'm hearing is that the bill allows Sikh, Hindu and Christian refugees fleeing persecution in Bangaldesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan a short path to asylum and I'm not against that considering what religious minorities there have been through (although I'd say Shi'as and Ahmadis should be added to the bill too) I've also heard that Assam is protesting because they don't want Bangladeshi immigrants in fear that their culture and language.1/2

the bill basically makes it so that Muslim refugees can never become Indian citizens. However, it opens space for the government to demand any Indian Muslim to "prove" their identity and since a LOT of Muslims living in poverty don't have official documents, or the government can simply refuse to accept their documents, it can take away their citizenship.

Basically the word of the law excludes only Muslim refugees but the scope to "misuse" (if it's intended purpose can be called a misuse) it to render Indian Muslims stateless is immense.

Also about the short path for other refugees: THAT is because the government wants to decrease the proportions of muslims in the country, in my view.
