the sweepstakes confirmed that darkners are still sentient/experience their "worlds" in object form! spamton talks about not knowing who the knight is yet, but he knows who they are after they arrive (ie. after the fountain is created). we also know the worlds exist because "the strange someone" interacted with jevil before the knight arrived in the card kingdom too (again, before the fountain existed) and they're almost definitely gaster/An Outside Force. the dark worlds just exist on a lower layer of reality, similar to how the light world does for us. we open the "game" and can interact with it, but the lightners don't go into stasis in their "code forms". the same is true of darkners – lightners can open fountains to go to the dark worlds, but they always exist even when the darkners are objects.

i certainly hope that’s the case. the whole concept of darkner existence, but especially memories, is deeply existentially troubling when you stop to think about it. my issue is that the memories that the darkners seem to have don’t line up with the timeline the light world seems to have established, and there appears to be no consistent rule as to when or where they are capable of forming memories (both before and after the fountains). ex: how does queen know king from prior interactions but not lancer? if the answer is ‘because lancer wasn’t born yet’, then how? he is presumably from the same deck as king, meaning that their objects were created at the same time and have existed for the same amount of time. logistically, they should be the same age, but are ostensibly not. what does it even mean that darkners can have children?

either something is very, very different about how time operates in the dark worlds, or we are operating on a much bleaker scenario in which the Last Tuesday theory is in effect: nothing before the dark fountains actually existed, and all the darkners were simply created with memories and backstories to serve the narrative.

this extends to the lightners, too, who remember their childhoods and past interactions, but in reality those things never happened. these people did not exist before we booted up the game. they are simply told to remember things from before that point, and so they do.

the Last Tuesday operating system seems to make the most sense in terms of standardizing the timeline, but it’s very bleak and depressing and imo delegitimizes a lot of the interpersonal relationships between the characters. i hope that toby is able to connect all the inconsistencies in a way that isn’t “nobody actually had a past and they were all just created with fake memories to push the narrative along”
