With the second part of their series „Italomodern“ Werner & Martin Feiersinger continued their meritorious undertaking of documenting the gems of postwar architecture in Upper Italy. Comprising more than 550 pages and covering 132 buildings the second volume is even more extensive than the first volume but the duo’s modus operandi hasn’t changed: each building is documented in one or more unpretentious photographs and supplemented with a plan and relevant data regarding location and architect. Interspersed are the brief CVs of each architect that are supplemented with a list of key buildings and relevant literature. But the main protagonists of the book are the buildings: the sheer amount of variety in styles, materials and typology is simply breathtaking. Quirky regionalisms take turns with brutalist just as well as highly individual buildings that in the best sense are baukünstlerisch. „Italomodern 2“, published by Park Books in 2016, is a beautiful collection of buildings, a handy field guide and a testament to the vital architectural developments in postwar Italy. For additional information and some more context I highly recommend the first volume of the series that in the meantime, just like the present one, has also been released in an English language edition.
