Serious post. No shitposting this time.
I was on YouTube recently watching some videos about art and there were a LOT of arguments in the comments about crediting/not crediting artists. I'm here to share my opinion. If you disagree, please put your take in the notes. Everyone else, for God's sake, stay respectful.
All art on my account is by @kendalart.
I'll be putting a point against crediting, and following it with my thoughts as to why that argument doesn't work.
1. "Credit isn't common decency."
Yes, credit is common decency. It takes maybe 10 seconds to pin a post tagging the artist or putting "Pfp by @[artist]" in your bio. It isn't that hard. It's also common sense. You didn't make it, just mention who did.
2. "Nobody cares about the credit" or "nobody will see it anyway."
Okay, and? That's not the point. The point is that you're stealing someone else's property. You wouldn't waltz into an art gallery, take a random painting, and walk out. Why is a pfp any different...?
3. "It's just a pfp."
Let me put in perspective how unreasonable this argument is. It appears EVERYWHERE YOU POST WITH THAT ACCOUNT. It is attached to your name. "Just a pfp" is like saying "it's just [insert critical part of your personality here]". It follows you everywhere you go, and EVERYONE who sees your posts sees that pfp. Why is this such a difficult concept to grasp?
4. "They don't deserve/need credit."
They drew the freakin picture. You didn't. That's reason enough. Art takes hours, days, weeks, sometimes more. If you made, say, a sculpture you were really proud of, and someone just took it and told their friends that they made it, how would you feel? Have some empathy. The world doesn't revolve around you. Get used to it bud. And by the way, if they don't deserve the credit, why are you using the art that you supposedly don't think is good enough to deserve credit?
5. "Nobody else credits artists! D:"
"A lot of people are doing this shitty thing, so I'm gonna be a part of the problem and do this shitty thing too." - fixed that sentence for you. Just because a bunch of people don't credit their artists (which, judging by this post, is more common than you think) doesn't mean you shouldn't either. You are your own person. You are not a robot.
Rant over, will update if I find any more hot takes :p
Some people's imaginations are as strong as dry spaghetti and they wanna make that everyone else's problem
One thing I am gradually learning to hate more about the general environment online is how much "don't be a dick" has to be wrapped in layers of "that dickishness has off target impacts to Protect Characteristics" for people to even start to care.
Don't be a dick about people being bald or their hair line receding. Not because that could impact minority groups but because it's just a dickish thing to do.
Don't lash out of everything that makes you uncomfortable. Not because sometimes that might be a righteous revelation but because sometimes situations are uncomfortable.
Stop needing a Equality and Diversity Impact Assessment to just not be a dick to people without provocation.
it doesn't matter how cool I think you are or how much I want to be your friend, if I hear you listening to TikToks in public my respect for you plummets

Me:
God I hate rich white people. I spent an hour at a coffeeshop near work in an upscale neighborhood where well off retirees set up camp at the outdoor tables in the morning literally blocking the entrance so you have to walk through their coffee klatch to get inside. They always seem to talk about wine and travel.
Then a homeless guy with a walker tried to enter and they did the avert-the-gaze thing and ignored him as he struggled with the pull out door literally in the middle of them. I got annoyed and walked over and opened the door for the man. When I went in a minute later to throw out my cup there he was again, struggling with the door to go out the other side, two men chatting right there, and again, I went over and held the door so he could roll through. Then I saw that all he’d gotten was a cup of ice. And I thought, fucks sake, I’m not in a position to do much but I can buy the man a cup of coffee, so I did, and now I’m just — mad. Fucking. Hold his fucking door, you utter assholes, I know I don’t always look either, I admit it, but Jesus Christ.
So that Dr Who piece I wrote yesterday has 31 likes and 6 reblogs. That’s almost a sixfold difference. Guys. IF YOU LIKE SOMEONE’S WORK, REBLOG IT. ITS NOT THAT HARD!!!!
