This scene oh my god. Spock just failed at becoming a Kohlinar Adept and HATES himself, he sees it as an extreme failure of all he thought he wanted. He is so pissy when he gets back on The Enterprise because of fate™ and then low key tries to suicide. When he realized V'Ger is pure logic with no curiosity and no eye for beauty, he realized he was wrong chanting "I should have known" because he should have known life without adventure, without beauty, without Jim was pointless but he didn't...not until now. He tells Jim he was wrong during the beautiful hand holding scene and then, while trying to explain why V'Ger is innocent, he gives us this. So fucking poignant, so beautiful, so perfect.
