SO for some reason nobody has really talked about the shadow counterpart we see in Six’s hunger episodes. (If you don’t know who she is click here (>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5I8mujCMcg).
Before we start I just want to say that this is my first theory on anything so giving feedback and sharing your opinion would be amazing! Anyway here we go!
(I am going to give dark/shadow six the name Ana, because it’s easier to write)
I am not going to drag this out any further here are my two speculations:
The first one is that Ana is Six’s imagination of what her eating disorder looks like. This is supported by the fact that we see her only when Six is going through a hunger episode and then disappears right afterwards. It would also explain why Shadow six is an exact copy of our favorite raincoat wearing child and not an entirely different child. Whether Ana has taken form and actually exists or if she is just in Six’s head cannot really be proven with this speculation. Although this one may be the most likely my research didn’t end here so let’s look at the much longer second speculation.
The second one is that Ana is actually a shadow kid. OKAY BEFORE YOU GIVE UP ON ME HEAR ME OUT.
Let’s talk about the shadow children first to clear up some things. I am COMPLETELY certain that the lady turns normal children into shadow ones (similar to how she turns kids into nomes) and cares for them. Why do I think she cares for them? Well friend firstly whenever we see her in the final chapter of the main game she is humming a lullaby. A lullaby that you would sing to a child. It was probably a melody that she really likes and the one that she hums to the shadow kids. Still not convinced? Well then tell me why we see her have so many toys when we play as the runaway kid in The Residence. I assure you those toys aren’t collectables, they are for the children she cares about. The shadow children. Her children.
Another thing that I want to point out is that their first reaction to the runaway kid/seven is weary curiosity. You can faintly see them running around and watching you in the darkness before one of them tries to attack you. They react as if they have never seen a normal kid before. But how could that be possible? Weren’t they once normal children too? WELL what if they don’t remember anything from before they were turned into shadow children, what if the lady erases their memory when turning them into what she desires. I mean if they remembered, would they really want to stay with her? She was the reason they were suffering in the maw after all. How could they see her as their mother/guardian if they remembered what she has done to them. That is why I think she locks away their memories with the masks they wear. (The masks are obviously special as they are the only physical part of our shadow cuties and the only obvious resemblance to the lady)
Okay here is the point where I explain what ^this^ has to do with anything. Here is what I believe happened said as simple as possible.
Ana was a completely normal child who got turned into a shadow kid (Whether if it’s because she tried to escape or the lady chose her or whatever other reason), but something happened. Something happened to her mask and it broke. Ana’s memories returned and the façade that the lady was her guardian/mother disappeared. She was PISSED when she remembered all the bad things that had happened to her because of the governess and she wanted revenge (Not only that, but if the lady saw her without a mask she would probably try to get rid of her). The thing is not having a physical body combined with the fact that she cannot use the light to her advantage anymore made it almost impossible. ALMOST. She knew the how to get rid of the lady. Now Ana only needed someone who was willing to do it. Nobody has really questioned why Six has a number for a name. What if Six was Ana’s sixth attempt at getting rid of the governess and the first five children she tried her plan with just didn’t make it. The reason she turns into an exact copy of Six is for familiarity. If she looks familiar then there is a bigger chance thatSix would listen to her.
As you can see the second speculation needed some imagination, but we know so little about everything that it just gives space to think about all possibilities. I hope this was interesting to read.
