<rant> Art Professors are Ignorant Douchebags </a>

My art professor just rejected my assignment because it was done digitally. She specified we could do it in any medium. I drew it digitally because that approach lended itself to the assignment. Today I got a note that said it couldn't be graded at all and I had to redo it. 

I fulfilled the objective of the assignment. Yet, I was penalized because I applied what I learned in class to a medium she didn't understand. She said it wasn't a drawing so I asked if it was a painting. She said it was a print. I told her I could bring the original file. That's about the time when all communication broke down and she protested that what I did was 'generate' art while I tried to convince her that every pixel of that artwork was mine, hand drawn. 

She had no clue. Yet, she says that an entire medium of artwork is irrelevant even though she has not idea what it is or how it works. 

I am so sick of this bullshit. This is why I left weber state. Digital painting is PAINTING. I don't press a magic button and have this crap make itself. I can count the number of art classes I've taken on one hand. Yet, I excel in just about everything I try despite my lack of experience in the traditional mediums. Either I'm brilliant, or my years of digital art have taught me things because it's actually ART. 

Her rejection of my work was incredibly insulting. I am so tired of having to pander to idiots who brush aside new artistic approaches because they're non conventional. What I'm doing isn't irrelevant. Digital art is used in illustration (book covers, card games, posters, etc), video game development, film, etc). All of those things used to be done exclusively traditionally.

The system is stupid; it's archaic and so full of its own self indulgent puffery that I just want to scream. It's no wonder that so many in the entertainment industry are largely self taught. Art is about principle that can be applied across many mediums. Digital art is no exception and that's what I heatedly argued in front of the class today. 

Until this point, I've hoped there would be someone I could meet in the academic world that would know what I am talking about or at least be open to learning. So far I've been met with passionate rejection. So you know what? After years of holding out that hope, I'm giving up. The system is a biased archaic piece of shit, run by professors with tightly closed minds. There was once a time when watercolor wasn't considered a legitimate medium, and then the system opened up. Not so for digital art. At least not until some of the douchebags die off.
