Yo, I’m planning to run a monster of the week style game with my friends this summer. Got the book. Got the group. Got some ideas. But do you have any advice for GM-Ing this game style?
The biggest thing I’m going to say is that the Hunters are the most important part of the game. Monster of the Week is remarkably collaborative, so try to build your mythology up around the Hunters, rather than trying to fit your Hunters into the mythology. Try to be flexible: they will do things like figure out the fact that you had monster eggs inside the dead bodies and make the final fight WAY easier on themselves, and react in ways you can’t possibly expect. Don’t railroad them too much; just see what they do!
The second one I’d suggest is to fill the world. The book talks about this a bit, but no really, go full hog on NPCs. Name everybody. Have a few notes about everybody. Do wild voices. Give them quirks. Design families and friends for your Hunters if that’s appropriate. Make this world filled and lived in and well thought out, because if everybody’s got a name, it matters if something happens to them.
The third is to figure out what kind of game it’s going to be! What kind of Hunters are your players going to be? Is it going to be dark and serious, or a lighter and wackier type thing? When is humor appropriate? What boundaries should you set down for yourself as a Keeper? (i.e.: are their families fair game? what kinds of topics and monsters should you avoid?) A lot of this, for me at least, is a discussion to have with the other players, based off what they want.
The fourth is kind of one I stole from Griffin, but I put my own spin on it: ignore the Histories part. I mean, it’s good for a one-shot, or if you’re making a pre-built organization Hunters group type, but my players found the options fairly restrictive for what they wanted to do, so they customized the fuck out of it so they were pretty consistently passing acquaintances in high school, and went into the first session with not all of them knowing that magic or monsters were even real, and the first session became instead about them discovering things about the world together, as a proto-pilot type thing. This is absolutely optional, but I’ve been finding a lot of our best moments so far are coming out of the fact that none of them have seen each other in action before, and none of them really know what they’re doing.
I feel that not studying stuff, I have a history exam tomorrow and Monday in two different classes that both are essay format but... instead I’m watching top ten videos. Oops.
we are partners in procrastination from now and on
So Emmet Kane... I would die for him because he looks like a diva and I love it.

itstaakotime submitted to storybookhawke: The black cat is Blake, not included in the pictures is the fact she is constantly making noise of some sort. The stripped cat is Toby, not included is the fact he’ll bite everyone else but me for some reason when he’s mad. Both are good cats and hope they help you feel better.
They’re both so cute, pls give them pats or head scritches for me

Literally relatable. I just got back from having 3 teeth filled and I still have to go back because I had so many cavities
oh no!! I just had the checkup today, I don’t start the fillings until my next appointment...
somehow bones full of holes feels appropriate for today though, at least
