Maybe he cares about her, but he hasn’t really showed it to us. I haven’t seen him care about anything much but himself and his power... but hey, we’ll see how it goes. I’m so glad you’re enjoying! The comphet stuff feels like a strong theme of the show to me, which is wild when as far as I know that particular term wasn’t in wide use at the time? It’s neat to see how certain experiences persist even as we talk about them and frame them differently. Maybe because of the discussion I exist in, I’m framing it that way, when someone else/in another time wouldn’t have....

Yes yes yes!! I love her so much, it’s really neat to see how completely she’s grown on me and how important she is. The way that she was set up like a comic relief character and has become so deep and important without fully losing the comic absurdity? It’s incredible. I love her. I root for her too!!!

I do think that he’s been manipulating her to only care for him, to depend on him. It’s bizarre to consider that they were adopted, because I’ve always had the impression Nanami was a bit of an un-favourite child, like their parents paid a lot more attention to Touga than to her and that that fed in to her grasping for affection, but then you expect that if they were adopted the parents wanted them both, right...? Or maybe that’s too optimistic of me.

I’m usually very sympathetic with kids/teens too, but in the case of Touga I just haven’t seen any evidence of him caring for them, you know? He comes off as a conscious manipulator who’s only in it for the End of the World. Like I say, I’m keeping my eyes open, and we’ll see how it goes for the rest of the show.

GOD SAME. It took a sec for that to sink in, but when it did it was an absolute battering ram to the chest.

Yeah, I do think her affection for him was coloured sexual/romantic because of societal expectations that That’s How Girls Feel About Boys-- and also by the weird sexual overtones to all his manipulations-- but that she hadn’t really thought through what that meant. I totally agree that that’s why walking in on them was such a personal shock to her; she was confronted with the reality of what she thought she wanted. It took me a bit to realize that she hadn’t parsed the lack of consent, but having finished the episode I do agree with you there too. I’m glad she’s breaking away. I wish her all the best.

some CS fun facts, as i slowly catch up on your liveblog: 1. a lot of people actually recommend benching linhardt on the running away level specifically because his movement is so bad + 2. CS came out before the interview that revealed claude's actual name so the line about him joking that claude's a fake name was the first time it came up

I used Lin a lot in my first run, when I ended up with a wide spread of all houses for my final team instead of focusing more on my initial house, and then I just did Black Eagles as well, so I’ve like....gotten used to his very very limited movement. And I just don’t think about it anymore, until I got this “flee for your fucking lives” mission and I was just like. Lin. Lin oh my god. Can’t you ride with Hapi or Dimitri on their horses. Can’t Balthus just carry you. I had to leave Dimitri back with Lin for most of it because I was worried someone would catch up to Lin and kill him. 

I wish you could get more than one of those “shoes of the wind” item in the base game. I think I used it on Lysithea my first run because I didn’t know there was only one of it or fully understand what was going on, so then she was running two paces ahead of Linhardt when he was the healer I’d basically dedicated to her, which is very very funny to imagine him being like “Lysithea...please slow down....I need to be next to you to warp you” while she’s just annihilating enemies left and right. (I used it on Hubert in CF because that only made sense and he’s too good at damage for me to have him stuck with the Linhardt Movement Problem.)

it's less overtly stated with edelgard, but it does go a long way to explain her actions and mindset + a couple of her paired endings (primarily lysithea but manuela too to a lesser extent) reference it (oops i missed the last part of the post so i didn't see you mentioned the paired ending, but i still think it...at least leaves plenty of room for argument on that point, plus her ending with manuela talks about manuela helping her maintain her health)

hm, I may have to disagree with you on Manuela’s ending referencing it -- I feel like it’s just saying Manuela helped her live a longer life? (”She became essential to Edelgard, and her skill as a physician kept the emperor in good health for many years.”)

which, if anything, disproves the theory that Edelgard’s life span was shortened by Crest experimentation -- Lysithea can only be cured by Crest scholars (Hanneman, Linhardt), Edelgard (who has obvious reasons for going out of her way to help Lysithea and potential insider info due to her ties with the Slithers), or Byleth (who, I guess, is special bc self-insert). if a physician was all it took to help Lysithea, she wouldn’t have had any problem finding a cure, surely?

revolutionary girl utena doesn't do bury your gays and i would say it doesn't count as queerbaiting since they wanted to make the main rship explicit but the manga artist wouldn't let them (and it is explicit in the movie version) also there is an explicitly canon lesbian character but also...it has a truckload of trigger warnings...

ohhhh whoops i shoulda specified -- was asked specifically about mlm (but samflam has good wlw too). but ty for this reminder that i should also rewatch utena........ i last watched the series in full when i was 8 and i don’t remember it so well. maybe that’s a good thing lmao

i've been trying to figure out a way to do that since they changed it and i still haven't found anything :(

yeah utena is REALLY heavy on the abuse themes - from the beginning but especially later on in the series. i can give you more specific trigger warnings if you want - there's even a thorough episode by episode list of trigger warnings out there if you need it, although that obviously contains spoilers. it's a really good series and definitely worth watching but it's sometimes not a great one to go in to totally blind
