Sameblod | Sami Blood directed by Amanda Kernell. I watched this film tonight at Indiana University Cinema. It screened as part of #Themester 2017: Diversity, Difference, Otherness. The film is riveting. 

Have you explored Amanda Kernell’s work? Sameblod is her first feature, but she’s made quite a number of shorts, including Northern Great Mountain, which was a precursor to the feature. I want to see them ALL and can’t wait for her next feature film. Any news on what she’s working on next?

Thursday I had a chance to see Dee Rees’ Mudbound on the big screen at IU Cinema. Originally Rees had planned to be present, but her schedule didn’t permit. Hope she’ll come out another time. Friday at IU Cinema I had a chance to see her HBO Original Movie Bessie, starring Queen Latifah.

Mudbound’s streaming on Netflix right now... and is also in select theatres.

This morning I watched Wallace & Gromit: The Case of the CGI Bunnies a brand new video essay by Laura Ivins. This is her 8th video essay created for IU Cinema’s A Place For Film blog.

Last week during IU Cinema’s Cheryl Dunye: Blurring Distinctions film series I had the opportunity to experience The Watermelon Woman, Black is Blue, and The Early Works of Cheryl Dunye—Janine, She Don’t Fade, The Potluck and the Passion, Vanilla Sex, An Untitled Portrait, and Greetings from Africa—on the big screen, enjoy a post screening Q&A and a Jorgensen Conversation with Cheryl Dunye. And I got to meet Cheryl in person, which was an added bonus. 

Looking for opportunities to see her work? The Early Works program and the 20th Anniversary High Definition Restoration of The Watermelon Woman are streaming on Kanopy. Also The Watermelon Woman, Greetings from Africa, and The Potluck and the Passion are streaming on Fandor.

I love her experimental and stop motion animation work. You can find some of it on her Vimeo channel. I also love her video essays, which she shares on Indiana University Cinema’s A Place for Film blog.
