The field of male R&B is crowded in 2015 with many urban playboys trying hard to turn up, flex and/or sex over the hardest trap beats. However, Philadelphia native Julian King takes a subtler approach on his debut EP Sing for You.
R&B lovers in general should find something to appreciate about the EP because King makes sure all bases are covered. “Unforgettable” and “Someone Like You” are filled with plenty of sweet compliments to make the ladies swoon; “Mine” and “Sing for You” are great blueprints for the fellas to use to help them make the ladies swoon; “No Love” is that cautionary word of advice to help avoid potential heartache; and even when straight sexing is the goal, there’s a cleverness to “Birthday” and a smoothness to “No Strings” that makes King come across as more considerate than crass.
What boosts the replay value of Sing for You even higher is the production. In a muddled sea of synthesizers, keyboards and 808s, hearing live guitars, bass lines, and drum breaks in the mix is actually refreshing; the same can be said for King’s soulful vocals being at the front of the music instead of it being a hollow drone buried in the mix.
Julian King is an R&B singer/songwriter that’s very much of this generation, which makes his songs fit right in context with the current climate of contemporary R&B. However, his attention to lyrical detail, musical craft and the genuine sincerity in his execution is what makes the difference.
