An Update: April 1, 2014

Around this time two years ago I uploaded a demo song on the internet. Sure, I could have waited for a more polished, final version, but I was too proud of my song not to show everyone. I suppose that’s what set things in motion for this band. There was no intention of “making it” (although it is nice to dream) with what I had in the works. I was simply wanting to prove to myself and to others that I could make some halfway decent songs.

Up until this point in my life I never had an album or EP to call my own, so when Lyme Times was released I was pretty stoked. It was hastily recorded and somewhat sloppy, but that didn’t matter to me. It was out there and that was all that mattered. I figured I’d give it some self-promotion on Twitter, Tumblr, and wherever else, not expecting much to come from the words “Hey! If you have a minute, could you check out my band?” (or whatever it was I said). I don’t know if my expectations were low or what, but I was taken back as to how many people enjoyed what I had made. Reviews and write-ups from blogs, people messaging me, and a slew of downloads. Had I expected all of this, we would’ve played more than one show in support of the EP. It felt great to be receiving a form of attention that was never there before. It was revitalizing.

With all of the kind words on Lyme Times, I couldn’t help but feel that I could take this more seriously and start working towards greater goals. The pressure was on for whatever was coming next, but the writing for Continuations came fast and easy. I was so proud of that EP. I’m still proud of that EP. Spencer did an amazing job engineering it and getting it sounding great in a short amount of time. We played a lot more shows in support of it, and in my eyes we did the most we could with that release. There’s only so much you can do with a four song EP until people want something new.

Summer 2013 was coming up and we were going to nail out a new record. Of course not everything is simple and problems are always present. For a good chunk of time I had issues with my tonsils. From August 2011 until July 2013 I would frequently get sick, and often it was pretty shitty. If you’ve ever had tonsillitis you know what I mean. This got in the way more often than I hoped for. Constantly feeling crappy isn’t the best motivation and in my eyes it has always hindered the progress I wish could’ve been made. Luckily I had my tonsils removed in July of last year. The surgery knocked me out for awhile, but it was necessary. Since then (almost 9 months ago) I’ve only gotten sick a couple times, and even then it was only the common cold. I’m glad to know that I won’t have to worry anymore if I’ll be deathly ill for an upcoming show or if we’ll have to push back recording. Canceling shows is horrible. Pushing back recording sucks. So I’m glad that’s all over now.

For the most part, that brings everything up to now. Where is the new album? We wanted it out in August, but in addition to this we’re full-time college students who also work part-time jobs and do a bunch of other shit. To make recording (and performing) even more difficult, I’ve been out in Washington D.C. since the end of summer. That said, I’ll be back in Chicago for good in May, and I expect a lot more to be going on with Ivy Dye. The new album will be released. As of January it’s fully tracked and just needs mixing. There will be a lot more shows to make up for the ones I wish we could’ve performed. Other plans that are in the infancy stages include merchandise, music videos, and even a follow up to the album that has yet to be released. Whenever I’ve had downtime I’ve been demoing out songs, and I already have a handful that I’m super proud of. Seriously. Get ready. It’s good stuff.

The purpose of this post is to say thank you. There’s been so much support from people I barely even know and it feels incredible. Because of you we’ve opened for national touring bands, played some of Chicago’s venues I never thought I’d have the chance to perform at, had features on popular websites, and even experienced live radio performance/interviews. To date we’ve had over 1,200 downloads on Bandcamp alone, and to be honest that’s about 1,200 more than I expected. On the more far-fetched end of accomplishments, being recognized at a party as “that guy from that band” was pretty cool. Honestly, thank you. Starting this summer I’m going to be investing my heart into bringing this project to its fullest form, whatever that may be. I was never quite sure what Ivy Dye was capable of, but I know it can be amazing with the continued support.

As some of you may know, I (Chris) had a tonsillectomy about a week and a half ago. It was rough at times, but today was the first time I was able to sing again. It felt great and I’m so excited to track vocals for the album in the very near future.

Things have been quiet recently. Aside from a show with Beach Fossils on May 1st and a late night drunken set at Beat Kitchen on May 25th, there hasn't been much noticeable activity on the Ivy Dye front. The promotion of Continuations (which came out almost half a year ago... what the hell?) has reached its end and it's time for some fresh sounds.

EP number three is being written right now. It'll be familiar, but there's also a sense of rebirth in the new songs. Life can change fast and music easily reflects that. Love has developed and longterm vices have been let loose, so in other words, what has been written so far is immensely more upbeat and reflective of the present.

This group has changed since everything started in late summer/early fall of 2011. The songs that have been released are representative of a full band, but all decisions and direction were decided by a single person. Over time Ivy Dye has grown from a sole proprietorship to an actual band, and it's going to be exciting to see how input and production from experienced musical backgrounds helps shape the final product.

You can all expect a release show in early August, but don't expect anything more than that this summer. It seems as if a long overdue tonsillectomy has proven most fitting in the month of July, and well... I shouldn't have to explain how that would make singing impossible. This hopefully shouldn't affect the plans for an early August release date of the EP, but only time will pop, lock, and drop it.
