Hi! I hope this isn't weird, but do you have any tips or tutorials on the textures/coloring you use that you'd be willing to share? I want to draw a scene from a favorite fanfic and every time I picture it, your TMA art comes to mind. I don't want to copy, obviously, but I think it really needs some of that otherworldly horror feel you do so well. I've worked a bit with texture brushes, but I'm not really sure where to start, especially incorporating multiple colors for definition.
Hi! I'm so sorry this is a late response, I wanted to give examples and such to help elaborate my points since I don't think I'm that good at explaining 😅 I don't think I'm the best when it comes to tips or such but I'll try and explain my points!
When it comes to colouring/textures, for me at least, it's really about what you're trying to convey with it. This might sound a bit like bullshit but hear me out. Most of my art tends to swing with certain colour palletes bc of the way I want them to be felt. Take this for example:
I mainly stuck with a blue pallete bc I wanted this piece to feel "lonely". Blue tends to be associated with this emotion, and the dark blue makes it feel more overbearing. The red was placed throughout the art as a way to pop out of the theme, to give it an unnatural effect. Also the mist like texture I added made it feel more ghostly, and also highlighted the characters at the center without making it too obvious.
Another example is this art:
Heavy use of red and red tones, as a way to express destruction and fire. The heavy use of textures gave it an effect of broken/old walls, which with the fire imagery makes it look more destructive.
I know leaning heavily on one general pallete tends to be a bit scary, but by studying other people's art and observing ur environments on different times/seasons, you'll get the hang of it! I highly recommend doing these cause I do it all the time and it helps me with the process.
Also! I highly suggest experimenting different types of brushes. They can give rough or soft effects and I think taking advantage of that will make ur art pop out more. Again, like colours, try and focus on What you want to convey in that art and use the brush best suited for it. Here's just an example of pens:
Anyway, I also highly recommend searching for textures online and using them on ur art; they can Reaaaally give definition to it and here's an example (left is no texture, right is with texture)
My art is very simplified, and I don't tend to put a lot of details to it. But adding textures makes up for it and makes it have more depth. I don't really have a tip on using textures other than just downloading randon textures u search online and using a blending layer with it to integrate it better into the art.
And uuuh yeah, that's basically it! I hope this helps? (I know I started to ramble here near the end I'm sorry!)
Tl;dr: For colours, focus on what you're trying to convey. If you're unsure, try studying other people's art or your surroundings and try to analyze what *you* feel from it. That way, u can associate colours with said feelings and be better at conveying the art. Experiment with different brushes for different reasons (make it have a rough or soft edge) and use textures (which u can download online from) to give depth to the art.
