Thanos took Loki, because he saw an Asgardian from the royal family trying to destory a planet. Half of Jotunheim had been destroyed by the bifröst and this is exactly Thanos ideology. Our purple grape had no background information about the reason behind this action and Loki probably never told him the truth. Thanos only thought that he found someone who had the same motives like him. Maybe the mad titan even knew about the past of Asgard and Hela and assumed that Loki would be like that, too. But when he figured out, that Loki actually didn't wanted to ally with him, he started to torture him. He was tortured with the mind stone, that's out of question since Thanos only had that stone and I think that the stone showed him his worst nightmares, the same like Wanda used her powers to manipulate the Avenger's minds. At the end, Loki was broken and ready to do everything for Thanos to stop this and that's how he ended up with attacking New York.

I would say that the nightmares were all about Lokis heritage. Probably involving every 'what if...' scenario if Asgard should find out. Thanos was probably never able to figure out what it was what Lokis resistance finally ended and he didn't knew that Loki only wanted to destroy Jotunheim cause he had, technically, an identity crisis and was desperate. And that's why he called Loki in IW an Asgardian. Loki never told him about his true heritage. He just played along, trying to survive.

Loki probably tried to gain Thanos trust, but when he was told what the plan of the mad titan was, he became rebellious and that's when he told Thanos that he won't help him to complete his plan to collect all Infinity Stones.

In IW when Thanos attacks the refugee ship. Loki knew that he wouldn't survive. Thanos would hunt him down and kill. He probably played with the thought to just run away using the Commodore, but that would only have meant to leave Thor behind. Thanos would have used Thor probably to get Loki out of his hiding since he knew that he even would sacrifices an Infinity Stone for his brothers life. When he was off screen, I bet that he was running away, but turned half way, cause he knew that this move would increase Thor's chances to survive. He decided to sacrifice himself for Asgard and Thor. That's why he's so cocky towards Thanos when he came back. He wanted to make his last seconds alive a show, something that the mad Titan would remember. He also decided to tell Thanos without hesitation, that he actually is the rightful king of Jotunheim, also telling him this way that he completely misunderstood him. It wasn't his plan to destroy the frostgiants, because he thought he had to.

I think, that Thanos was a bit confused about this revelation. He had expected someone who understands him, but Loki just smashed it in his face that he was wrong. Telling Thanos that he would never be a God just proves this, and also prophesies that Thanos can't win this battle. He can't act like a God, because he doesn't understand what it means to be one. Our little Trickster just tells Thanos in a pretty extraordinary way that his plan is completely idiotic and that he would have done it completely different as a God.

Loki Lives (maybe)! OMG! Guys, did you see this?!

Perhaps this is the proof that Loki has faked his own death again and Thanos killed a fake Loki’s body. I know that the figure is unclear but it doesn’t look like for example Valkyrie( we know she survived infinity war ). 

Someone may say it’s too complicated and fans grasp all the details in the hope that Loki is alive, but Marvel often hides easter eggs like this in films.

Proof That Loki Is Alive

There’s a really good theory floating around the internet and I wanted to expand upon it. Loki is alive and pretending to be Bruce Banner. My first reaction was that it was impossible but now that I’ve thought about the evidence, I think we have a real contender for how Loki survived the fight with Thanos.

We don’t see what happens before Thanos attack’s Thor’s ship. Thor: Ragnarok ended with Thanos’ ship appearing before Thor and Loki as they look out the window of their vessel. Infinity War starts off with the many Asgardians already deceased and Thor beaten by Thanos. What happened between those moments? My theory is that Bruce, Korg, Miek and Valkyrie took half of the Asgardians on a smaller ship and escaped while Thor and Loki stayed on board and tried to defend those that were left behind. It would make sense that Hulk would offer to accompany Valkyrie because he wanted to make sure he could defend her if her ship was attacked. I think Thor’s ship didn’t try to escape to distract Thanos into not pursuing the other Asgardians. 

There was a strange inconsistency with Thanos’ power level that can be explained by Loki pretending to be the Hulk. I knew something was off when I watched Cap hold back Thanos during their fight scene in Wakanda. Earlier in the movie Thanos defeated the Hulk easily despite how powerful he was in all the other movies. Either the writers forgot how powerful the characters were or they have a secret plan. I choose to believe that the writers aren’t ignorant of their own source material. 

Before Heimdall was killed, he sent the “Hulk” back to Earth. I think that the reason why Thanos beat Hulk so easily was because Loki can transform to look like the Hulk but can’t copy his power level. Heimdall is omniscient thus he was either aware of Loki’s plan or figured it out. He sent Loki to Dr. Strange because Loki knew more about the Infinity Stones than Thor. 

Loki stayed as Bruce Banner because in Thor: Raganrok, Dr. Strange showed his reluctance to trust the Asgardian brothers when they went to Midgard to find their father. Loki probably felt that if he showed up in his true form that Dr. Strange would either attack him or not believe him about the threat that Thanos presented to Earth.

Bruce Banner isn’t able to transform into the Hulk. My theory on this is that Loki pretends to attempt to turn into the Hulk in front of the Avengers so they continue to believe he is Bruce. He knows that he would be useless as the Hulk because he doesn’t possess his power. Thus, he gets the Hulkbuster suit to help them fight in the Wakanda battle.

Another reason Loki stays in character as Bruce is because Thanos thinks he has already killed him. Just like how he pretended to be the Allfather for years until Thor revealed his true identity, I think Loki is hiding out as Bruce Banner until the threat is mitigated. 

Loki’s lines before he is killed by Thanos are very cryptic. Using words like “undying” and telling Thor that “the sun will shine on us again” implies that Loki didn’t die. Even Thanos saying “No more resurrections this time” applies to the situation because Loki doesn’t need to be resurrected if he didn’t actually die but this is a good way to throw off the audience. 

In Thor: The Dark World, we saw that as Loki was dying he started to turn gray. This didn’t happen in Infinity War. Loki’s death in the Dark World was meant to be permanent before reshoots so I’m assuming that when he dies, he changes color possibly due to him not being able to control his seiðr anymore. 

In the trailer for Infinity War, we see that the Hulk bursts out of the Hulkbuster suit during the Wakanda battle. I was wondering if they either did reshoots to change that during the actual movie once they decided that Loki was going to pretend to be Hulk. I’m basing this on the reshoots they did for Thor: Ragnarok in which they showed Hela destroying Mjolnir in an alleyway and in the movie it happens in Norway because the Studio decided to give Odin a more fitting death scene. Maybe they were planning on killing Loki originally but felt that it didn’t do his character justice so they changed it to where they can trick the audience but also still have Bruce Banner play an important role in Infinity War. 

Loki rushing at Thanos with a small dagger is out of character. I have a theory that Loki has mastered creating magical clones of himself. We saw that Dr. Strange can make physical clones of himself in Infinity War. Loki has had thousands of years to perfect his use of seiðr. For him to only conjure up a small dagger that didn’t even reach Thanos’ throat is ridiculous. 

Loki’s death served as a distraction to Thanos so he would leave the ship without killing Thor. The line that Loki says before he is killed is “You will never be a God.” Only a God like Thor could survive a spaceship explosion and floating through space without oxygen. Loki wanted to play it safe for himself and his brother. By pretending to sacrifice himself and giving the Mad Titan what he wanted (the Tesseract) he made sure that Thanos won’t pursue the Asgardians anymore. This was Loki’s best chance at saving his brother’s life because immediately after getting the Space Stone, Thanos leaves without finishing off Thor.

Ok so....

What if loki knew what he was doing. Like he knew thanos would kill him but that was his intention, to die. Maybe he felt like he failed at being a good leader to his people and being a good son. Or maybe it was just self sacrifice so Thor wouldn't die.

WE DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE END OF INFINITY WAR (I THINK).

HERE THERE BE SPOILERS (And an optimistic theory)

So after I stared for a few minutes at the credits rolling and muttering “what the fuck was that”, I started thinking, and have come to the conclusion that (most things) will, despite appearances, be okay.

So clearly, there will be a part two. That’s a given, and probably why they wouldn’t announce the name of Avengers 4 (which I’m dubbing Infinity War II: Shit Gets Fixed).

My theory of optimism rests on a few key points:

1) We all knew Infinity War was going to be different, but I highly doubt Marvel is going to make what was essentially an extinction-level event of some of the most popular characters permanent. Even if solely for the fact that there’s no way they’ll shut down the Spider-Man and Black Panther franchises after one movie. There’s just way too much money to be made there.

2) If we look at this from a storyteller’s perspective, the story is only partway through. A conventional story model (I’ll use the one presented by James V. Smith, Jr. from Writers Digest) like the ones comics tend to adhere to, has your opening scenes, various “Pivotal Complications” (ie, Thanos obtaining more and more infinity stones), the “Worst Complication Possible” (Thanos is on Earth, alien army is rolling in), and then the “Worse than even the Worst Complication Possible Complication” (ie, Thanos has all the stones and half the human race is dead, including our faves). Only then do you start seeing resolution of the conflict.

Watching the movie, it felt like a lot of build-up (which I realized at the end it was). I went into the moving assuming the conflict would be hashed out and resolved, because that’s how most movies, especially Marvel ones, work. (You could argue Civil War is an ongoing, unresolved conflict, but there is a clear, if rather unhappy, dynamic reached by the end of the film). I expected a lot more of the movie to be devoted to action scenes directly fighting the conflict, not building up to it. Which I guess is my point: This movie was a bunch of Pivotal Complications and setting up of the conflict. A story doesn’t end with a bunch of death and a cliff-hanger. There has to be some sort of resolution, happy or not, which we haven’t gotten yet. And I’m fairly certain the final resolution will be better than it seems right now.

3) My actual theory is thanks to Dr Strange. On the way to Titan, Strange makes it very clear to Tony that his priority is keeping the Time Stone away from Thanos- and explicitly says that if it comes down to saving Tony or Peter, or saving the stone, he will save the stone.

When the crew reaches Titan, Strange does his cool thing where he looks into the future for all alternate possibilities- something like 14 million. Then we have the dramatic scene where Tony asks how many they win, and Strange says “One”.

I don’t think that’s just dramatic- it’s foreshadowing.

Because what does Strange do? He gives up the stone to save Tony’s life. And as much as I’d be down for that Bromance, forty-five minutes (or however long their space voyage was) with Tony would not be enough for him to break his sacred vow. It’s too out of character, too unbelievable. (You could call it too... Strange).

Unless... unless it’s not really to save Tony’s life. At the very end, just before he turns to dust, Strange turns to Tony and says “It was the only way”.

The only way for what? For them to win. The only way to make that one future where they defeat Thanos reality.

So why should we be optimistic?

4) To defeat Thanos, the remaining Avengers will have to get at the very least one of the Infinity Stones back. More likely, they’ll need to recover all of them.

How they’ll do that, I have no idea. That will probably form the Pivotal Complications of the next movie. Eventually, however, I think we can agree that Thanos will be defeated. I just can’t see Marvel ending it’s legacy with “Well, the Avengers failed, your favourites are dead, and so is half the universe. Life sucks sometimes. That’s all folks!” So assuming Thanos will eventually be defeated, the Avengers are now in possession of the Infinity Stones- including the Time Stone.

It’s possible here that with Thanos defeated, they’ll call it good. The conflict has, after all, been resolved. With devastating consequences, but resolved. However, I can’t see Tony, or Steve, or any of the Avengers being content with that. Especially with their personal losses involved.

I’ll admit it’s been a while since I saw Dr. Strange, but from what I remember, those who were involved with the time travel remember the events happening (Ie, Dormamu recognized he was caught in a time loop because he remembered the previous loops; Stephen remembered the destruction that occurred, even if in the end, it didn’t technically happen). So the question is how far back they decide to go. My first thought was the attack on the Asgardian ship, but even with forewarning from Thor, it’s unlikely that an unarmed ship would hold against Thanos. Most likely, they’ll go back to before the massacre of Xandar that Thor mentioned, where Thanos got the first Infinity Stone. With forewarning from Thor and Rocket, the Guardians would be able to warn Xandar and quite possibly defeat Thanos there with the Nova Corps, before he gets the stone. And before any of our favourites die.

So Thanos is defeated, none of the Avengers ever actually died, and our hearts can start beating again.

Thanos’s true plan (SPOILERS)

Thanos’s plan makes no sense to me. Why would he wipe out half the universe to save us from extinction if he can do pretty much anything with the infinity stones like create more resources or more planets? And why are the original Avengers the only ones left alive? clearly he has something else in mind.

He is the one who brought the Avengers together in the first Avengers movie by sending Loki.

But after Civil War, the Avengers broke up and it would take more this time than just Coulson dying to put aside their differences. Thanos knew that, and he was right, because even the end of the world was not enough to make Tony call Steve. So pretty much like Ozymandias in Watchmen who killed a bunch of people to end the Cold War, Thanos killed every new character that got in the way of Tony and Steve’s friendship. Steve needed to lose Bucky who killed Tony's parents and Tony needed to lose Peter by the same hand that killed Bucky so they could fight alongside once again. Thanos is just a hardcore Avengers fanboy who couldn’t bear to see them fight one another in Civil War. So he brought the band back together.
