“Happy valentine’s day sir… I am not entirely sure what you like… so I stayed up all night to write a poem for you… I’m sure this is nothing at all compared to the other fancy and luxurious gifts you have received… But incase you don’t like this then we can simply discard it and pretend it never happened…”
She pulled out a sheet of paper and read it out loud.
“You’re as dark as the night yet you shine like a star.
You’re so wonderful, anyone can see it, even from afar.
It would take an entire book series just to describe how amazing you are.
You have beauty and brains, what more could anyone ask?
You’re so smart and strong, you’re able to handle any task.
Your meals are so delicious.
You’re talented and ambitious.
And your smile is so hot and devilish.
After a lovely heartwarming day.
The sun sets, the moon rises, we stand at the edge of a bay.
But it all ends with happy valentines day…”
She handed the poem sheet to him and there is a drawing of him attached on the back.
After a rather quiet day, Ruki turned around to see a girl approaching him with a sheet of paper. She seemed adamant about delivering it to him, heartfelt feelings and all. Normally he was not one for random notes or letters given how his mother abandoned him as a child, but since it was poetry perhaps it didn’t trigger him this time.
“If you are going to hand me a gift, then there is no need to be self-deprecating about it. Ha, just watching you fumble around reminds me of livestock,” he scoffed, skipping a proper greeting entirely. “A poem, you say? Since you took the time to write it, I’ll humor you by reading it.” With that said, he snatched the sheet from the girl and glued his eyes to it.
Each line of poetry was simple and easy to understand, yet the use of rhyme and imagery impressed Ruki. This was no easy feat as he often read literature and took the time to dissect its meaning and use of diction. It brought a slight smile to his face that someone would take the time to write this for him.
“Your rhythm and meter could use some work, but overall I enjoyed how you used sound and rhyme to express yourself. I understand this is a free verse poem though, so it’s likely you wrote without many rules restricting your syllables. Color me impressed.”
Before leaving, Ruki clutched her by the chin snd forced their gazes to meet.
“Perhaps when we meet again I can share some poetry anthologies with you that have great examples of establishing a beat. I look forward to it.”
