December 18, 2019 - Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis)

Found in much of Southeast Asia and Eastern Asia, as well as parts of South Asia and the Middle East, these small herons inhabit freshwater marshes and swamps. They eat mostly aquatic insects, their larvae, small fish, frogs, crustaceans, and mollusks, hunting while standing, walking slowly, or climbing through reeds. Females build the nests from marsh plants in bushes, trees, and other vegetation near water. The chicks grow quickly and are able to begin leaving the nest as soon as five days after hatching.
