Author notes: Might be slightly OOC because this is purely self-indulgent I just want soft papa Izana because let's be real almost everything is either pure smut or angst and a girl needs her fluff from time to time, AU where Izana lives after Tenjiku Arc, more or less around 10+ years after the incident.

! Warning: mentions of violence and blood !

If you ever told Izana that someday he'll learn to manage with the anger and resentment he had for the world, move on with his life and live normally, find a wife and have children he would look at you as if you suddenly grew a second head. To him, something like that was nothing but a pipe dream. He had no desire to live past what his burning rage would allow him to, nor did he ever believe in anyone else's goodness after how deeply Shinichiro's betrayal had wounded him.

The battle against Toman should have been where things ended. He even remembers everything in excruciating detail. The gunshots, the bleeding and the intense ringing in his ears as every breath he heaved was wet and thick with blood gurgling from where he had been shot - he can vaguely remember the way Kakucho called out to him - how the sounds of fighting stopped briefly as he bled out on the ground.

In more ways than one his death would have been his saving grace - an escape from the pathetic life he's lived. He remembers thinking, finally - before everything went black. In the end he hadn't been anything at all. Not anyone's son, not anyone's brother - the world will move on, the world will forget and Izana found some strange sense of comfort in that fact. He feels the warmth of Kakucho's hand on his own but doesn't hear whatever it is he's screaming in his ear.

Heavy....

Everything felt so heavy.

Then suddenly everything was gone.

Izana thought that was the end of it, that death had finally claimed him but weeks later he wakes up in a hospital bed and he wonders briefly if God wanted to spite him and was laughing at his face. The first thing he did after waking up was to manage a weak scoff despite how dry and coarse his throat felt from weeks of unuse, a curse whispered faintly under his breath at the absurdity of the situation.

If it hadn't felt real back then - then surely the scene in front of him wasn't real either.

The tiny hand holding his pinky was pudgy and pink. For a second Izana wonders if he had truly died that night and everything up to this point was just some hallucination he's conjured up at the end of his life, but the tiny hand's grip tightens, and the tanned man is pulled back from his thoughts as the baby coos and lets go of his pinky momentarily to reach for him.

"Izana are you okay?"

He turns his attention away from the baby to you. Izana's eyes are a little glazed and unfocused as if he was thinking of something far away. He hums in reply, a low tone that vibrates in his chest and makes the baby curl up further into his hold (something inside him crumbles at that, as if his hands were meant to protect and not to hurt).

"I was just thinking."

You smiled a little before sliding up next to him on the couch, shoulders touching as you reached over to fix the baby's blanket. She was fussy earlier and had caused the wrap to loosen. Normally it would take you quite some time to wrestle with her to calm down, a couple of begging and a bribe here and there even though she can't really understand you - the baby babbles and cries to retort anyways as if unsatisfied by her current situation (you're trying your best, you really are). But the moment Izana swaddles her and carefully takes her into his arms she quiets down like magic. Her cries instantly die down and she stops trying to kick off her blanket like she's taking down ten thugs at a time - she just blinks sleepily and nuzzles further into his embrace. You would have taken offence at that, if it wasn't for the fact that the scene looked so heart-warming and picturesque.

For now, you'll just admit defeat and conclude that your daughter likes her father more than she likes you.

"Thinking is dangerous." You jest. "Especially when you don't share them."

Izana scoffs and looks back down at the infant in his arms, his stark white curly hair casting a shadow over contemplating orchid orbs. Looking at him right now you can already see how fatherhood has taken its toll on him. There are bags under his eyes from adjusting to the baby's erratic sleeping schedule, his shoulders are hunched a little further as tiredness seeped into his bones from carrying her whenever she fussed and his hair was a little messy from when he had quickly ran over from the grocery. But even then, you still think he looks handsome and even more when you know he's doing his best despite being unfamiliar with this kind of warmth.

There's a beat of silence.

And then another.

You figured that's the most you were getting out of him tonight when he suddenly starts to speak, voice low and almost gravelly as though he's not sure if he's allowed to break the serenity washing over the room.

"She's real isn't she?" He asked.

You blinked. Once. Twice. Processing the question before answering.

"The baby?"

He nods almost imperceptibly, running the back of his finger against his daughter's chubby cheek. She giggles and coos, almost tries to catch his finger in her mouth as Izana pulls his hand away. You're silent for a moment before reaching out to tuck his hair behind his ear, effectively gaining his attention (You don't call him out for the hopeful look he has in his eyes).

"It is. And so are you."

You answered firmly, cupping his cheek gently with one hand. He closes his eyes instinctively and leans further into your touch. Your wedding band catches the afternoon light as it floods into the living room through the window and you vaguely recall how there had been a time when Izana had asked you the same thing before.

You answered him with the same conviction back then and you'd do it time and time again as long as he asked.

When Izana closes his eyes he sees flashes of red beneath his eyelids. He remembers the way blood felt as it seeped out of his wounds. He remembers how cold he had felt as he bled out on the pavement. He still remembers what it feels like to beat someone's nose into their face or the high and rush of adrenaline he feels after a long fight. Izana knows his hands are stained red and he won't deny the kind of person he was - that he is - because at the end of the day he doesn't really feel like he's been redeemed. He's a sinner. He should have been rotting in hell. There's no way to take back what has happened in the past and the grief and anger that Izana had felt from all his childhood never really disappeared, it just became a little more manageable - tucked away in some corner of his mind.

But when he opens his eyes now and sees the way his daughter clings to him and how you look at him like he's the best thing you ever have in this world - he figures that maybe sometimes sinners are allowed to dream.

His thoughts drift to Emma - to the heavy sinking feeling in his chest.

He'll pay for his sins someday, for the lives he's taken and the lives he's ruined.
