I've just gotten to the part in the Bob Spitz bio that describes Beatlemania 1964, and it is truly horrific. I feel like we get a little desensitized to it, or the narrative has glossed over some of the worst stuff, but it really was a series of traumas! some of the crazy things they had to endure from fans, just during the 64 US tour:
several climbed down from the roof of a hotel using bedsheets
a pin-back button was thrown onstage, cutting John's forehead enough that he was rushed to a doctor ("It wasn't a wound - but it was a wake-up call" -Larry Kane)
someone threw a T-bone steak at Paul, for some reason??
fans got through barricades set up around their hotel made of plywood and razor wire and snuck into closets and under beds
after the Beatles learned about a plan by the hotel's staff to sell the carpet and sheets in their rooms, they sabotaged the plan by pissing over "everything in sight" !!
disgruntled fans after an aborted show broke windows of adjoining buildings to try to get backstage
the trees around the Hollywood Bowl were filled with fans who had climbed up into them, enough that John remarked "Welcome to you in the trees!"
when trying to go out one night "George and Ringo had to be literally lifted and passed over the crowd to keep them from being trampled."
a college student got to them by posing as a room-service waiter
a mother was caught literally crawling through the air ducts
someone ripping a necklace from Ringo's neck and tearing up his shirt
"It scares you," said one LAPD lieutenant
