“270, Orange Street, please.”
“You got it.” He hit the occupied button as you shut the door and settled into the back seat. Once you were good, he started his meter and pulled away from the large office building.
You were focused on the screen of your phone, honestly just playing a game to avoid the awkwardness of silent car rides with strangers. You hadn’t even looked up at the man once you got into his back seat, but you could occasionally feel his eyes on you when he glanced it in rear view mirror. One such moment, you sighed and shifted, focus deepening on matching the candies on your screen.
You were stopped at a light somewhere, when you heard someone yelling on the sidewalk. You looked out the window, and it looked like they were yelling at you, but you had no idea who they were and it wasn’t your name they called out, so you just ignored them and went back to your phone.
A moment later, the front door to the cab opened, and someone slipped in just as the light turned green and the cab started away. “Hey!” you gave the stranger an incredulous look. “What the-”
“Mish, didn’t you hear my calling you?”
“I’m working.” He snapped.
The stranger looked back, and your hands came up in a ‘what the hell’ motioned, but he just gave you an awkward smile before turning back to the driver. “Okay, but Misha, this is important. We’ve been trying to call, and-”
“Like I said,” he motioned behind him to you. “I’m working.”
“But we’ve got a gig!”
“What?”
“Yeah!” the stranger wore a huge grin, dimples showed on his cheeks. “A legit fucking gig.”
“When? Where?”
“If you would have answered your phone..” he frowned and shook his head. He was moving in the front seat, but you couldn’t see what he was doing.
“Fuck off, Jared, you’re here, just tell me!”
“Turn left, here.”
“Jared, I’m-”
“It’ll take two seconds. Come on. Right there.” You could hear him typing on a phone. "Where you heading?"
"Orange street."
"Yeah, so cut this way, it'll bypass a bunch of the lights on this street. Shave off two minutes. You might not like it, but she will."
"I'd like you to get out." You muttered to yourself, annoyed that your ride home was being interrupted.
He turned, and about a block down the street, he slowed at a stop sign, and the back door opened. "Hey, guys." The man got in next to you, forcing you to slide over with a grumble. "Who's this?" He gave you a confused look.
"I’m the person paying for this ride-"
"Oh, awesome. Thanks."
You stared at the man next to you, mouth agape and Misha glanced back at you both. "I'm working, Jensen. She's my fare."
"Why are you picking up people when we're-"
"He didn't." You snapped. "I was here first."
"Oh.." he looked to his friend in the front with a silent "yeesh" before turning to their previous conversation which prompted you to roll your eyes again. "So, did you tell him yet?"
"Getting there."
"We've got a gig!" Jensen bounced in his seat next to you.
"Yeah, I got that." Misha muttered, looking out as he drove, switching to the next lane for a turn. "Jolly green interrupting giant here hasn't told me-"
"I was getting there!"
"It's at The Bootleg."
"No shit!?" Misha glanced back, turning in his seat for a moment only for everyone to yell at him to keep his eyes on the road. "How!?"
"Rob's playing." Jared informed him, while his buddy next to you found himself focused on you again. "Demanded us as an opening act. If it goes good, we might be able to score a few more shows."
"Nice! Oh, coming up on Orange."
"Hey." An elbow nudged you, and you looked at the man next to you. "You like rock music?"
"Maybe."
The smile that spread over his lips easily drew your attention. "Wanna come to the show? I play a mean guitar."
"We're here." The cab stopped, and Misha stopped the meter.
You licked your lips as you focused on pulling out cash and hanging it forward. "Keep the change."
"So, what do you say, sweetheart?"
"I'll think about it."
"How about I pick you up." He continued to smile at you as you froze half way out of the cab and looked back at him. "Saturday, 'round 6. Drinks when I get off stage."
"Jesus Christ, Jensen." Jared rolled his eyes. "Only you could pick up a girl in Misha's cab."
"I didn't say yes." He just continued to smile at you and you sighed. "What time do you go on?"
"9." Jared answered from the front seat while you slipped out of the car, finally.
"I'll be there at 8."
Jensen's smile widened. "I'll make sure you're on the list, sweetheart. What's your name?"
"Y/n Y/l/n. You better have a drink waiting for me too."
"Anything you want. Just name it."
"Surprise me." You shut the door and started up towards your place.
"I just might.." Jensen licked his lips and watched you enter your building.
