CW: death of a loved one

Part 1 of the promised Jacintdiel angst comic :)

The Cross-Dimensional Compass allows Diel to travel through spacetime pretty much unrestricted, with which she visits and hires pirate crew members from various universes. However, she is very, very careful not to abuse this power. She knows just how easily using it for ‘little things’ could lead into her acting like she’s above the natural consequences of life (even if the Compass technically makes it so that she is).

For example, one rule she has set is that if someone dies, they die. She can’t go back to save them, she can’t go back to see them.

She has broken this rule exactly once.

Jacinta Mada was the captain of her own crew, in the time just before Settlers. Though she preferred to stay in her own world, her crew and Diel’s would meet up for a little while now and again.

It was during one of these meet-ups that Diel learned of Jacinta’s death.

(This comic starts right after Diel portals to Jacinta’s ship; hence holding on to the Compass in the first page)

Bonus panels:

Jacinta didn't tell her crew the exact reason why Diel was there, or what was going on; she figured Diel felt bad enough as it was having come back and burdening her with the knowledge of her own impending end

(In that one panel she's talking and signing at the same time; it's a habit she and her crew members picked up so no one's completely exempt from their conversations, seeing as Njeri's deaf)

“Where’s Jacinta?”

Diel was sure to sign as she spoke, as Njeri was on deck, but she didn’t get an answer. As she looked around her fellow captain’s ship, she saw everyone looked so subdued, so somber, she started to feel a heavy sense of dread and unease settling into her chest.

It felt wrong in every sense. It felt like a nightmare, but somehow worse, because it was real.

She looked towards Jacinta’s first mate, the grin long gone from her face. “Njeri…?”

The pirate didn’t meet her eyes, hesitating for a moment before looking up and signing;

‘I’m sorry.’

Diel almost felt her heart stop.

‘Jacinta’s dead.’

“…wh-what?”

Jacinta Mada, a powerful sorceress and captain of her own all-women pirate crew (specifically to spite men that didn’t allow women on their crews—this is on a version of Earth in the 1600’s, albeit one with magic). She’s also Diel’s late lover.
