rereading the Last Binding trilogy, and it’s great how there’s a specific moment when Hawthorn thinks of Maud, “lol she’s shaped like a commanding officer”, accidentally internalizes that thought, and is completely incapable of un-internalizing it for the rest of the books. Yes, he is showing up whenever summoned to use his lordly influence to get this girl out of Situations. No, he also does not know how he got here or why he’s doing this. Society(TM) thinks they’re sleeping together, but unfortunately she’s entirely a lesbian and his ex is effectively her brother-in-law, and moreover that would violate the chain of command.

I've been tearing through the Last Binding trilogy at a breakneck pace for the past week and am about a third of the way through A Restless Truth and the boat group dynamic has me in hysterics.

Like. An Ace Attorney weird girl, a tragic blonde noir dame, and a jewel-stealing erotica author unionize to torment God's Worst Bisexual. Effervescent. All of these people have different priorities and agendas even as they undertake the same plot quest but they have wordlessly and unilaterally decided that They Cannot Let Lord Hawthorn Live. And they're right.

when I first read A Restless Truth, I was also playing a game of “Meanwhile in England” where I was trying to decide which scene would be funniest if Robin saw it as a late-entry no-context vision after Maud had already departed

and I thought nothing could beat the sheer confusion of him seeing the Dramatic Erotica Reading with no sound and no context. but no, the FUNNIEST moment Robin could possibly see is Maud rushing into Jack’s arms and giving him big doe eyes and trying to pretend they’re Actually A Couple, In Order To Get Out Of Her Crimes

because poor Robin without context would just spend the next week storming around and sharpening his knuckles like THAT BASTARD! HE SEDUCED MY SISTER, THAT BASTARD, I’LL KILL HIM!!! nonstop 24/7 every waking second of every day and then some

only for maud to get home and be like “seduced? what? no. absolutely not. I adopted him. I needed to find an interim older brother to cope.” and somehow that’s worse. he misses the days when he thought seduction was involved. that was a simpler problem, emotionally.

Book launch poster for A Power Unbound, book 3 of Freya Marske/@fahye's spectacular The Last Binding trilogy which has completely taken over my brain for the last few years. See the ones I did for book 1 and 2 here (they do look nice all lined up, if I say so myself!)

This book has so much cool action and twists and turns, and one of my favourite romances of all time (it's somehow the softest and the spiciest). Added all the other characters as well because I adore them, the most hyper competent yet chaotic protagonist group ever to run amok in 1909.
