erin cartwright was five, nearly six months pregnant with her first child. every morning she woke up and immediately thought how grateful she was to be pregnant. she had been trying with her husband jack for quite some time and they had come across a few false positives. nothing was more devastating than finding out they weren’t accurate. so this last time the couple made sure to buy as many kinds of pregnancy tests as they could just to be absolutely sure. after eight at home tests and a visit to the doctor, it was confirmed. jack and erin cartwright had a baby on the way. now, being pregnant and still running the gallery did not make this time of year any easier on her, but she didn’t mind. as far as she was concerned, she was the luckiest woman in the world so christmas only enhanced her joy.
christmas morning was especially joyful. jack’s father, walter, who had been living with them for some time now, had been doing particularly well lately. she knew how much it killed jack when his condition was on the worse side, so for things to be good now was just perfect. erin was awake by seven thirty and had breakfast ready by the time the cartwright men joined her. she greeted them both with a warm “merry christmas” and handed them their plates. the last thing they were planning on doing before getting ready for christmas with erin’s family, was open presents. there weren’t a lot or anything, but it was tradition.
it’s a wonderful life played in the background while the three opened their gifts. but right in the middle erin felt something. a kick. she quickly grabbed jack’s hand and placed it on her stomach. ”it kicked. our baby kicked,” she said, smiling from ear to ear. jack gave his wife a kiss and returned his hand to her stomach to feel a kick again. after his hand was lifted, erin took walter’s and placed it on her stomach. ”that’s your first grandkid.” and from the smile on his face, she could tell it meant something to him to. ”merry christmas walter,” she said as she stood up to get ready for the rest of the day. just before going upstairs she gave jack another kiss and then kissed walter on the forehead. now if only her entire family could get along, just this once, it would be the perfect holiday.
