Time Loops & Meet Cutes (CBR7 #18)
Time loop stories are not my favorite genre so when Jackie Lau announced last year that Time Loops & Meet Cutes would be the title of her next book published by Atria Books, I took note but hadn’t planned on prioritizing it in my reading. Then I was sent an ARC and my curiosity and trust in Lau pushed me to accept it and get reading. When we meet Noelle Tom, she is an overworked, underpaid,…

Book Review: Time Loops and Meet Cutes by Jackie Lau
After eating dumplings at the night market, Noelle Tom finds herself stuck in a time loop. She keeps living June 20th over and over again, with no reason as to why. The only clue she has at her disposal comes from the lady who sells her the dumplings at the stall, saying that eating them would give her what she needed most. But what does she need most?
That's the question.
As Noelle suffers through the pangs of reliving the same day, she also goes on a journey of self-discovery causing her to pause and reflect on everything from her career aspirations, to her familial relationships, to her love life. Along the way, she meets a lovely stranger named Avery who is stuck in the same loop, and a brewery owner named Cam, who she keeps bumping into in various locations throughout the day. As she grows more attached to him, she wonders if she'll ever make it to June 21st or if they'll ever have a shot at something real.
This was a sweet and fun take on the Groundhog Day trope. I liked the subversiveness of Noelle not being trapped in the loop alone, with her and Avery being stuck in it together and their friendship being a prominent part of the novel. I also enjoyed Noelle and Cam's meet cutes throughout the repetitive Fridays, how there were times where he almost remembered her, but not quite. There was also a twist in the second part that made for a pleasant surprise. I will say that there were some repetitive plot points and interactions, but I think that's to be expected with a story with this premise. The resolution of the mystery could have been better, too.
All in all, though, I enjoyed how this story encouraged Noelle and Avery to take risks, be present in their lives, and open themselves up to new avenues of happiness. Cute all around!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC in exchange for my review.

Four Weddings to Fall in Love (CBR16 #27)
Four Weddings to Fall in Love is the story of Max Mok and Kim Sung. Their meet-cute happens at mutual friends’ wedding and is quickly followed by a lackluster one-night stand. They both think the worst is behind them, and they can just move on and never see each other again. Except, there are three more weddings that summer that they are both attending (which happen to be Max’s first cousins and…

Love, Lies, & Cherry Pie (CBR16 #16)
I make a habit of reading Jackie Lau books when I can, and being able to read Love, Lies, & Cherry Pie as an ARC was something I just couldn’t pass up, particularly when the logline for the book is a Pride and Prejudice retelling having a good time with some tropes (Lau tends to always have more than one in her work). The tropes in question are fake dating, forced proximity, and enemies to…
