The aftermath was impossible to escape, news reports and constant calls coming in that had left him little time to breathe. Let alone to feel the mounting dread with every second that ticked down and brought him closer to that meeting on Santa Monica pier. It might’ve been a blessing that he’d been swamped with work since then, because then he didn’t have to scramble for the right lies to tell Maggie. He’d never been good at it to start, and even if he was only trying to protect her, they still burned his tongue every time he told her something as simple as not to worry about it.
He was. Enough that it had put him at a bar, even if he hadn’t gone back sense. Memories were hazy, his cheeks turning red when he recalled half the words leaving his own tongue, but the only thing he would agree with was that it wasn’t him. Not solely because of regret, but because he’d made a choice a long time ago to be a different kind of man.
One that follows through on his promises, even if he’s terrified of what might come after. He’s selling his soul and maybe his sister’s too, but the alternative still seems worse. Eventually she’ll lose control. He knows and she knows it, even if they won’t say it. So he’s left standing on a pier waiting for the devil to show, pretending there’s anything out in the vastness of the pacific ocean that matters more to him than his sister’s life..

What do you think of the man and woman who held up your ambulance and held you at gunpoint?
“I think I’ve seen a lot of people go to extremes when they’re scared or desperate. It’s what put them in that position that concerns me.”

The text is quick, swiftly typed explanations and apologies that are probably far too familiar by now. There’s guilt sitting on his shoulders even before he hits sends, promises broken to himself as much as they are to Maggie that things would be different this time. He wouldn’t fall into the same patterns, missing too much time with his sister because he couldn’t say no. But there are alarms going off over his head, the ambulance racing swiftly through the streets thanks to too many desperate calls coming in from too many places in the city.
He doesn’t know much about the cause of them, little except the possibility that the world chose today to end. There’s the terrifying possibility that it might be at Maggie’s hands, but it’s nothing he chooses to acknowledge until he’s left with no other choices. He has little to compare it to, but it seems like she’s doing well. There haven’t been any incidents, she hasn’t run.
And any thought that her hands are the cause is erased in the next moment, the whole world shuddering around him. He grasps desperately for a handhold as the ambulance shakes around them, and if he hasn’t been in Los Angeles all that long he can only think it’s an earthquake ripping beneath their feet. His heart races faster in his chest, tilting his head to try and get a glimpse out the front, but in the next moment the vehicle is jerking to a stop.
