“Nygma.” A man sauntered into Edward’s work space, paying no mind, it seemed, to the hellishness that raged on outside, much like his companion that sat across from him at his desk. He’s small and quiet, usually, but far from unassuming; he had an air about him that tended to make others rightfully wary in his presence, but that never seemed to be an issue between the two convening scientists. He walked a little further into the room and, disregarding the spare chair entirely, perched himself decidedly on the edge of the other’s desk. “Edward, I have a proposition for you. Would you be interested in a little science experiment, of sorts?”

“You’re not an easy man to track down, I’ll confess,” Adrian said as he came in, glancing down at the table with casual curiosity and then averting his eyes as though he didn’t want to be rude. “If I’d been able to find a phone number, I would have gone with that, but… well.”
“I applaud your efforts, truly.” His voice was as flat as it could have been, and Herbert sincerely wished that this man would stop skirting around the issue of whatever he’d come here for. If he’d gone through all of the trouble of finding Herbert specifically, by tracking down his workplace and who only knows what else, he must have had something important to say. The thought itself was quite worrying to him. It wasn’t often that anyone sought out the company of Herbert West; this unexpected visit could not have been for nothing. “Since you’ve gone through so much to find me, what is it, pray tell, that you need me for?”

Isabella froze when he spoke. He had made it. He had fused a creature together, out of fingers and eyes. He was just like Strange – a mad scientist, a creator of monstrous things. He’d made it in his basement. She could hardly think. Was he an ex Indian Hill employee? Was he working alone?
“You made it,” she said, slowly. He sounded so proud, so pleased with himself, and Isabella couldn’t remember ever feeling more offended on behalf of her clone brethren. She reached out and grabbed his arm with a vice-like grip, using a considerable amount of her strength to dig her fingers into his flesh. “Why? Why would you make something like that?”
With a substantial amount of effort ( Herbert West had always been a rather small man ), he wrenched his arm free from her grasp, taking a step back. He’d never been fond of people touching him, much less grabbing him that way. Her fingernails cut shallow divots into his skin and, when he tore away from her, it caused tiny beads of blood to breach the surface on some of them. He scowled, gently dabbing at the scratched skin with the fingers of his other hand. “Do not put your hands on me,” he warned, voice low. He huffed, looking to her in distaste. “I would have answered you readily with out all of that.” Herbert crossed his arms, debating on whether or not he should grace her with the information about his research after her actions. But, with the little beastly thing still running free in his house, he supposed he did still need her help to find it. “Yes, as I’ve said, I made it. I am a doctor and a scientist, as you well know -- I’ve told you before. For years now I’ve been researching the re-animation of dead tissue, and this was part of the research into my theory on consciousness being located throughout the body and not solely in the brain. Now will you help me catch it?”

The fact that he sounded completely uninterested, even annoyed, at the situation, was horribly reminiscent of Hugo Strange.
Isabella looked at him, coldly, and folded her arms. “I’m not doing a single thing,” she said, “Until you tell me why you have a monster in a box.”
“I made it,” he explained, sounding all at once quite proud of himself, annoyed with her attitude, and as if it should have been obvious that he was the cause for the little creature’s existence. “I made it, there, in the basement. Now, if you would help me find it --”
♧ Any part of their canon portrayal you dislike?
it depends on which canon variant i’m talking about tbh, because in the films/comics/film novelization, i love him! he’s a little shit about a lot of things, but it just kind of works for him. in the original h.p. lovecraft story, though, i’m a little less enthusiastic about how he turns out (which is…… dead, and decidedly more evil than he ought to be). like, herbert is a horrifically amoral character and he gets himself & his assistant into a ton of trouble, but in the original story, it goes a little too far with that, like he ends up so terrible and mad with power that pretty much the only reason his assistant even sticks around is because he’s afraid of what herbert would do to him if he tried to escape. i like the film portrayals especially, because herbert at least has somewhat of a shred of humanity in him & does most of the shit he does with arguably good intent? well. i mean, he tries.
Herbert West: human disaster.

“Okay, but who was that? Because, and correct me if I’m wrong, people don’t go chasing other people into dark abandoned parts of the city for NO reason…” Harleen’s words trailed off as she looked around, trying to find even the smallest clue to where they were… how they could get home. Instinctively she pulled out her phone, sighing in frustration when she noticed the ‘E’ symbol at the top “Right, of course! No signal.”
“I wish I could say that I knew,” he told her, his gaze flitting about, suspicious, trying to check every corner and shadow for signs of a possible threat. “It could have been someone who was looking to mug a few unsuspecting people. Maybe even a case of mistaken identity -- albeit one with some... malicious intent behind it.” He paused, watching her check her phone, his frown deepening when she discovered the lack of signal. “We should try to find a payphone, or someplace that would let us call for a cab.”
with @re-animatcr, continued from here.
Isabella stared at him, momentarily floored. “A… what?” she asked. “Did you just say a monstrosity?”
“I might have, yes,” he answered in that dull, flat tone of his. “And now we’ve got to catch it before it gets somewhere it’s not supposed to be.”

“Dr. West?”
His face was practically calculated to appear as mild and unassuming as possible- brows lifted and slightly furrowed, lips parted.
“Sorry for interrupting you- may I come in?”
Herbert said nothing in regards to the apology; it was likely a false one, anyways, as the man before him was still vying for his attention instead of allowing him to return to his work (which he would very much like to get back to). “I suppose,” he said, his clipped tone of voice indicating he would have rather said otherwise. He turned, leaving the other standing in the doorway as he returned to his work space, briefly glancing over the body on the table and looking, as he waited on his surprise visitor, for anything of interest.
A Shoggoth on the roof Sounds crazy - no, certifiably insane! But here in our little village of Arkham, Massachusetts, you might say every one of us has a Shoggoth on the roof And I’m not speaking of metaphorically! It’s not easy having a… malevolent shapeless monster like that, hanging over your head, but there it is! Arkham is the home of many strange things A big monster like that on such a pointy roof You may ask: How does it stay up there, if it’s so difficult? That, I can tell you in one word: Tentacles!~

Harleen hushed the man at her side, leaving a single finger placed on her lips as if to prove her point. They were being followed. She wasn’t sure how long it’d been going on but the last thing she needed right now was a creep following her. Harleen peeked from the edge of the building, sighing in relief when there was no one there. “We lost him.” Her eyes glanced up for a second, mouth falling down in contrast. “Um… Herb …. do you have any idea where we are?” She turned back towards the man at her side, eyes wide as she waited for his response.
Herbert glanced at their surroundings, a tight-lipped frown on his face as he tried to determine what part of town they were in. He didn’t leave his house much as-is, save for going to work or meeting up with an acquaintance of his, like Jackson or Harleen. It was safe to say that he hadn’t been within miles of the area before in his life, unless, by chance, he’d passed through in a taxi sometime at night. “I’m afraid not, Miss Quinzel.”
“i didn’t break it. it broke all on its own.”
“Whether you did it or not, that broken box means that some kind of monstrosity made from severed fingers and an eyeball is now running free… somewhere.”
